Miles Taylor, former Chief of Staff of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security during the first Trump administration, responded to The New York Times article titled ‘Trump Administration Admits Canceling Grants to States That Did Not Vote for Him,’ which reported: “Federal officials said in court documents that they halted billions of dollars in funding for energy projects to states ‘based solely’ on whether they backed Trump in the 2024 election.”
Taylor wrote on social media: “I’ve been saying this for months. This is criminal. The Trump administration is doing it over and over. People can go to prison for this.”

The Times reported that a lawyer for the Energy Department conceded in a court filing: “With one exception, the 284 terminated grants had a recipient location and/or at least one place of performance in a state that awarded its electoral votes to Kamala Harris in the 2024 election and has two Democratic-caucusing senators,” and that none of the terminations were “based on any programmatic, statutory, cost-reduction or performance-based factor.”
Former U.S. Attorney for Alabama, Joyce Vance, replied to Taylor: “And there’s a 5 year statute of limitations meaning that these crimes could be prosecuted under an entirely different justice department.”
