Woman, 64, and man, 25, fatally shot in Garfield Park
Screaming and wailing could be heard Wednesday afternoon on a street in the Garfield Park neighborhood in the aftermath of a shooting that left two dead.
In the 200 block of South Pulaski Road, a woman lay on the ground in grief as police and bystanders gathered around her, moments after learning that a woman she knew had been killed.
“They shot my momma,” the woman repeatedly said as residents and police officers tried to guide her from the street.
At 11:55 a.m., two gunmen approached a 25-year-old man who was standing in the block before at least one of them opened fire, shooting the man and also a woman on another block. The man died as well as a 64-year-old woman with a gunshot to her chest in the 300 block of South Pulaski Road, according to Chicago police.
The gunmen sped away in a black vehicle headed southbound on Pulaski Road, police said.
Both unidenified victims were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where they pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.
Police said they believed the man, who was shot multiple times, was the intended target.
Late Wednesday afternoon, officers continued searching for evidence within the neighborhood, with multiple patrol cars and a police helicopter. Staff at a nearby school looked on as a police investigated the case. Several streets near the scene were largely sealed off with red and yellow police tape.
Bystanders claimed the shooting happened within multiple blocks of South Pulaski Road.
“This is crazy,” said a bystander who did not want their name used. “This is an innocent woman.”
Ald. Jason Ervin (28th) called the shooting a “cowardly act of violence.”
“I am absolutely outraged, and those responsible must be found and held fully accountable,” Ervin said. “If anyone has information that can help bring these killers to justice, I urge them to contact law enforcement immediately.
The investigation remained active Wednesday.
