Bears training-camp report No. 20: DT Gervon Dexter (hamstring) not with team in Tennessee

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Breaking down the Bears’ Thursday training camp practice with the Titans:

What happened

The teams went about two and a half hours in the middle of the day with the temperature in the high 80s and high humidity. Several Bears players came to the sideline with apparent cramps.

Heated competition

The story of the day was a late-practice hit by Bears safety Xavier Woods on Titans wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson that knocked Robinson out of practice. Read more here.

Odeyingbo looks good

Bears defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo, coming off a season in which he had one sack in eight games before tearing his Achilles, had at least two would-be sacks on Titans quarterback Cam Ward. As usual, players weren’t allowed to hit the quarterbacks, and referees generally let plays continue unless it was painfully obvious.

Notable absence

Bears defensive tackle Gervon Dexter has been the subject of trade speculation lately and exited mid-practice Tuesday. Bears coach Ben Johnson said he has a hamstring injury and didn’t travel to Tennessee.

Halftime

The Bears and Titans took a break about halfway through their practice and players went into the air-conditioning bubble for several minutes. That’s relatively rare in the NFL, and the Bears haven’t done it in any recent camps. “It was good simulation for actual gametime because you’re going to come out hot and there’s going to be a halftime in the game and you’ve got to be able to maintain that,” defensive tackle Grady Jarrett said.

What’s next?

The Bears and Titans play a preseason game Saturday, and roster cuts for the regular season are due Sunday.
