Pounding surf undermined the driveways of two beachfront Malibu homes Tuesday, causing a gas main rupture.
Los Angeles County Fire Department crews responded about 5:45 a.m. to the 31600 block of East Sea Level Drive, neat Point Lechuza.
The Southern California Gas Company was summoned to shut off the gas, according to a fire department spokesman.
“There is a sinkhole there, but the home is not occupied,” he said after the initial call.
Images from the scene showed one end of a driveway had collapsed. And according to a broadcast report, a second driveway was also affected.
Malibu Building and Safety personnel were called out to examine the homes’ structural integrity. It was not immediately clear whether the residences have been deemed uninhabitable.
