Nine people were killed and dozens more were shot in Chicago over the Labor Day holiday weekend.
Despite a broader decline in violence, eight people were killed and 30 others were wounded in shootings over the weekend, mainly on the South and West sides.
An additional homicide was reported when it was determined that a CTA passenger was shoved from a moving Red Line train on Monday afternoon and died after landing on the electrified third rail in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood, according to Chicago police.
A fight erupted aboard the train around 2:30 p.m. in the first block of West 69th Street, and three people involved in the altercation pushed a 29-year-old man off the train, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hours later, two men were shot to death during an argument with someone they knew inside a home in the 600 block of West 74th Street around 11:55 p.m. Monday, police said. One of the men, 45, was shot in the chest and neck. The other, 32, was shot in the chest, police said. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Daje Williams, 27, was found fatally shot around 7:30 a.m. Monday in a Woodlawn home in the 6300 block of South Vernon Avenue. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said they were conducting a homicide investigation.
Five other people were killed from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday. The victims include:
- A 26-year-old man died after being shot Sunday evening in the 2700 block of North Harding Avenue.
- Jerome Kirk, 20, was fatally shot Sunday afternoon while sitting in a car in the 300 block of North Lamon Avenue.
- Crystal Salter was found shot just after midnight Sunday inside a home in the 2100 block of West Jackson Boulevard.
- Enderson Linares, 29, was in the 6500 block of South Laflin Street when the two people shot him early Saturday.
- Josh Washington, 28, was fatally shot Friday in the abdomen by a person he was arguing with in the 7300 block of South Kedzie Avenue.
During last year’s Labor Day weekend, nine people were killed, and 52 others were wounded in what was described as the summer’s most violent holiday weekend.
