Bruno Fernandes left Old Trafford with what appeared to be a limp after Manchester United’s Champions League victory over Sabah on Thursday night.

The skipper was on the scoresheet again as United marked their return to European action with a thumping 4-0 victory over the Azerbaijan outfit.

United were in control at half-time with Michael Carrick making changes in the second-half of Sunday’s derby showdown with Manchester City. Youri Tielemans was replaced at the break by Mason Mount with Andrey Santos coming on for Kobbie Mainoo just after the hour mark.

Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko – two others hopeful of starting against Enzo Maresca’s side this weekend – also came off but Fernandes remained on the pitch until the final whistle.

The 32-year-old was on the receiving end of some heavy challenges during the game with video footage captured outside Old Trafford appearing to show him leaving the stadium with a slight limp.

The Portugal international is seen moving gingerly before waving to the crowd.

Fernandes has missed just five games through injury since joining United in January 2020 with a hamstring issue ruling him out for three of those last season.

United will remain without Amad Diallo and Carlos Baleba for the visit of City with the former still recovering from a knock he picked up just days before the start of the new season.

Baleba meanwhile is working his way back from an ankle injury he suffered during Brighton’s pre-season campaign.

Luke Shaw was left out of the squad on Thursday night having missed training the previous day. United later clarified his absence was due to a ‘designated rest day’ with Carrick later revealing the left-back felt some discomfort in the draw with Everton last Sunday.

‘He came off the other day [at Everton] with a little bit of cramp,’ Carrick said on Thursday.

‘We didn’t want to take any risks really. We tried to manage him so we will see how he is after this one.’
