Nick Reiner’s Trust Paid Attorney Alan Jackson Almost $350k Already

Nick Reiner, accused of stabbing his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, to death inside their Brentwood home, has made headlines in recent weeks for his attempts to access a trust fund his slain parents set up for him when he was born. The younger Reiner insists that he was owed a large payout when he turned 30, and that he needs access to the money to pay a high-powered legal team. He has argued that the trustees overseeing the money have been unfairly withholding it. While a final decision has yet to be made on the money, a former administrator has stepped forward to accuse Reiner of failing to disclose how much money he’s already obtained from that trust. Here is what is going on.

Nick Reiner’s fight for access to his trust fund started months ago. In June, the younger Reiner filed a petition in California probate court requesting access to a trust fund set up for him. He has argued that the fund has clear instructions for the release of the money, half of which he insists was supposed to be distributed to him back in 2023.

His petition stressed that these are not estate assets but his own funds, and that he legally deserves access. Nick’s filing claims he needs the money to rehire Alan Jackson, a high-end attorney who worked on his case for a short time, and to buy basic items like socks and hygiene products from the jail commissary. Anita Wu, his trust lawyer, argued the distribution was owed to Nick more than two years ago and should have already been paid. Nick’s petition put the trust’s value at about $1.7 million.

While Nick Reiner has long insisted he is out of cash following his parents’ deaths, a former administrator of his trust alleges there is far more to the story than Nick is sharing. Paul Kanin, who previously controlled the trust, made the claim in court documents obtained by <a href=”https://www.tmz.com/2026/10/13/nick-reiner-got-trust-fund-money-to-pay-alan-jackson/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>TMZ. Kanin revealed he approved payments totaling $348,000 several months ago.

According to the filing, the money was used to cover two weeks of work that Alan Jackson’s firm performed for Reiner immediately following the Reiner family murders. Kanin argues that the trust has disbursed funds in accordance with its rules.

Only half of Nick Reiner’s trust was allegedly owed to him before his parents were found dead. The second half was not yet due for release. It is unclear why Nick Reiner was not paid the money that was allegedly owed to him in 2023.

When did Alan Jackson withdraw from the case?

Alan Jackson, one of the country’s most sought-after defense attorneys, was retained shortly after Nick’s arrest. He abruptly withdrew on Jan. 7. Following the shocking move, he told reporters that circumstances beyond his and Nick’s control forced him to withdraw as counsel.

In a declaration filed with Nick’s June petition, Jackson shared more information about how he came to take on the case and his decision to step away. He said a family representative contacted him in the early morning hours after Nick’s arrest and that he began working on the case before any money had been paid. While Jackson said he was retained with a guarantee of payment, family support was subsequently pulled, leaving Nick Reiner unable to pay the bill. Jackson said he would return to the case if funding became available. As it stands, Nick Reiner is being represented by a public defender.

Nick Reiner is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the Dec. 14 slayings of Michele and Rob Reiner. The charges carry a special circumstances designation. He pleaded not guilty in February. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced in September that his office will not seek the death penalty, meaning Reiner faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole if convicted. A trial date has not yet been set.
