What makes this photo important?
Over the years, several world records have been set during the Chicago Marathon. It is one of the biggest marathons in the world, drawing elite runners and running enthusiasts alike. This photo was taken near Mile 22 in Bronzeville, one of the most grueling parts of the marathon, according to runners whom reporter Zoe Singer interviewed.
How did you get this photo?
Our story focused on supporters helping runners push through at Mile 22. I wanted to convey the physical challenges they faced during that stretch. Compared to other parts of the marathon route, this one wasn’t the most scenic, so it made sense to zoom into people’s expressions. I stood on the side of the road as a steady stream of runners approached. I was scanning the crowd for people who looked like they were in the zone when I spotted this runner who lifted a bottle of water. With my camera set at high speed, I took several photos and picked the one that showed water cascading down his face.
