Labour have pledged to scrap the panel of experts that approves gender recognition certificates and replace it with a medical professional.
And they are not backing the Tories’ plan to change the Equality Act to make clear that the protected characteristic of sex refers to someone’s biology.
But polling for charity Sex Matters shows 48 per cent of Labour supporters agree with this while just 20 per cent are against.
Maya Forstater, CEO of Sex Matters, said: “This election campaign has proved that women’s sex-based rights can no longer be dismissed as a fringe issue.
“These results show firm support for policies that protect those rights.
“If parties putting themselves forward for government want to represent the mainstream, they should take serious note of the overwhelming support for sex-based rights across the political spectrum.”
