Gabriella Cilmi is preparing to make a huge comeback in 2025 after recording a song that has brought her ‘more joy’ than she’s felt in years.

The Australian singer is best known for the 2008 song Sanctuary, which famously featured on the St. Trinians film soundtrack and propelled Gabriella, 33, to stardom, along with the hit song Sweet About Me.

She has now confirmed that new music will be released next year after what has been both a ‘liberating and terrifying’ 2024 for her.

Alongside a black and white portrait photo of herself, Gabriella wrote in an Instagram post: ‘Fare thee well 2024. This year really tested me, I’ve had to really learn to trust myself and surrender more than I’ve ever had to which was equal parts liberating and terrifying.

‘Something I’d been dreaming about and preparing for, for a long time happened.’

The popstar then explained how she made a song that she ‘really loves’ and ‘can’t wait to share’ after meeting ‘so many magical people along the way’ this year.

‘I’ve felt more joy than I’ve felt in years making music,’ she added.

However, it has also been an enlightening experience for Gabriella who explained that she’s explored social and political issues that have transpired over the past 12 months.

She continued: ‘Saying that, I also feel I have woken up to the state of affairs in this world in a deeper way and it’s made me want to dig even deeper and do more to help where I can. It’s made me aware of the things I take for granted and how much more I have to learn about the global community.

‘I pray 2025 brings more peace above anything else. To anyone taking the time to read this I wish you lots and lots of joy in the New Year. I’m so grateful for every single kind word I’ve ever received on these “social media platforms”, and I am so excited to share new music with you and play loads more shows in 2025. Lots of love, Gabriella Cilmi X.’

News of Gabriella’s new chapter was welcomed with open arms and supported by fellow Australian singer Kate Ceberano, who commented: ‘I totally hear you. The highs and lows and the trials of being human. Can’t help feel it so intensely. I look forward to hearing your new album and meeting you in person.’

Fan and follower Shauna also said: ‘Beautifully stated Gab. I am so proud of the human you are and the personal growth you have opened yourself up to and taken on board.

‘And I am not only busting with anticipation for your new music and album but also to see you here in your hometown in early 2025. May the new year fulfil your dreams and bring you much love and happiness! Xo shauna.’

Gabriella’s first album, Lessons to Be Learned, was released in 2008 and included the song Sweet About Me, which reached number six on the UK Singles Chart.

The tune went on to become one of Gabriella’s most catchy and recognisable hits.

One month after its release, it topped the Australian ARIA Singles Chart and stayed there for five non-consecutive weeks.

That same year, she covered Connie Francis’ Warm This Winter, which was featured in Co-Operative’s Christmas advertising campaign.

Gabriella has toured with Sugababes and James Blunt and has received a Brit Award nomination. She has released three albums with her last, The Sting, arriving in 2013.
