Australian pop star, Daniel Merriweather, has launched his musical comeback almost two decades after his chart-soaring hit with Mark Ronson.

The 42-year-old singer made a splash in the charts in 2007 after featuring in Mark Ronson’s album Version, on the single Stop Me – a fresh take of The Smiths’ Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before – which peaked at number two charts.

After being discovered, he was signed to Mark Ronson’s label and performed with the famed producer at the Brit Awards the same year.

Two years later, in 2009, he dropped his debut studio album Love & War which comfortably made it into the top 10 on the UK charts, alongside his singles Red and Change featuring Wale.

However, following a successful start – also collabing with major artists such as Adele – Daniel took a huge step back from the music industry…. until now.

The singer recently took to Instagram to promote his brand new single, 99 Times, to his 10k followers with the caption: ‘My New single is called 99 Times and I’m happy to say that it’s available across all streaming platforms. Let me know how you interpret the lyrics.’

The post was a grainy photo of the artist in a white vest and showing off his tattooed arms on the first slide and the title, 99, on a green background on the second slide.

He releases music independently under his label, A New Dawn.

Fans are already praising his return in the comments, with @rebelheartrossi writing: ‘Absolutely loving your new song.’

And @telli_ninjasonik echoed: ‘VIBESSSS , voice of a angel.’

Although this is his first major single in years, he didn’t make a total disappearance from the world of showbiz.

In the 2010s he featured on various singles and even toured as an opening act for Corinna Bailey Rae.

In 2020, he also released two singles called Paradise and Rain as he teased another comeback which never fully manifested.

‘It represents a restart, it’s about new beginnings,’ he told Billboard about the single at the time. ‘It’s about the collapse of broken systems and the celebration of a new chapter.’

This year he has staged his biggest return to the music scene yet, also releasing singles Indivisible, Orbit, and Love.

He said about his inspiration behind Orbital that it’s ‘about how it felt for me to recently find out that I am native to a country, that for my whole life, I was told my ancestors stole.’

Daniel added: ‘It’s about wanting to fly into Orbit and see this speck of land from above and realise that no one owns the land, no one owns the earth and no matter what anyone tries to tell you; you deserve to be wherever you are, just as much as anyone else.’

In a separate post, he confirmed that he had an EP in the works.

In 2009 he opened up about what it was like touring with Mark and what he loved about the singer.

‘Early on, we were both the white boys that liked hip-hop and adored great soul music. Then, in the studio, there was a certain chemistry that developed.

‘I don’t listen to a lot of people, I’m quite pig-headed at times, and he’s one of the only people that can make me shut up,’ he told The Independent at the time.
