One of Netflix’s newer Christmas films, My Secret Santa follows Taylor, a single mum in desperate need of a job. The storyline is ripped lovingly from Mrs Doubtfire and has an echo of White Christmas in its ski resort setting, and sees Taylor lose her job just ahead of the holidays – and just as her 15-year-old daughter lands a spot in the ski resort’s pricey snowboard classes. When a vacancy as the resort’s Santa pops up, she disguises herself as an elderly man to convince the hotel to hire her. Of course, the son of the resort owner is devastatingly handsome and, well, you can guess where it’s going… (Picture: Netflix)

Kate Winslet’s directorial debut landed on Netflix on December 24, and having racked up 7 million views in just a few days, it appears to be a success. Written by Winslet’s 21-year-old son Joe Anders, it follows four siblings who gather around their dying mother (Helen Mirren) at Christmas. It’s certainly not your usual festive fluff, but if you’re sick of the twinkly fairy lights, fake snow and cheesy romcoms, it’s worth a go. Metro’s very own film critic Larushka Ivan-Zadeh gave it three stars in her review, writing: ‘Heartfelt rather than visionary, this Crimbo drama is unlikely to get the Mare of Easttown actress quitting her day job. Tonally, it could’ve done with a bit more darkness. But, honestly, do we really want that at this time of year? Just about bittersweet enough, it’s still one to warm your chestnuts.’ (Picture: AP)
