A Beloved ’90s Sitcom Reboot Just Got a Major Update

Married With Children

Sony Pictures Television has confirmed that the long-rumored “Married… With Children” animated reboot is no longer in development. Originally announced in May 2022, the revival had generated buzz for its plan to reunite the original cast — Ed O’Neill, Katey Sagal, Christina Applegate and David Faustino — with “Family Guy” executive producer Alex Carter attached as showrunner.

The reboot remained in quiet development for nearly two years before being officially shelved, according to TVLine. While Sony did not provide a specific reason for halting the project, the studio emphasized that the property “remains very important” to them — though no further plans have been announced. Collider also reported that the cast stayed attached to the project well into 2023.

This isn’t Sony’s first attempt to revive the series. A Bud Bundy spin-off led by Faustino also failed to make it to air. For now, Sony has not confirmed any alternative projects involving the “Married… With Children” brand.

While the reboot has stalled, the original series continues to attract viewers across multiple platforms. According to CBR, “Married… With Children” ranked No. 10 globally on HBO Max’s most-watched TV shows list as of June 20. The show’s renewed popularity comes nearly 40 years after its original premiere in April 1987.

Set in Chicago, the sitcom followed the chaotic Bundy family — cynical shoe salesman Al, his unmotivated wife Peggy, and their two kids, Kelly and Bud. Known for its raunchy humor and boundary-pushing storylines, the show ran for 11 seasons and became FOX’s longest-running live-action sitcom. Despite frequent controversy and criticism over its portrayal of women, it remains a nostalgic favorite with an IMDb rating of 8.1 out of 10.

“‘Married… With Children’ is often met with discomfort from audiences,” CBR noted, pointing to its polarizing tone and sharp-edged humor.

Today, all episodes are available to stream on platforms like Peacock, Hulu, Pluto TV, Roku and COZI TV. Its continued success highlights the staying power of the Bundys and the show’s lasting impact on television comedy.

Fans Have Mixed Reactions Following Cancellation News

News of the reboot’s cancellation drew mixed reactions from fans online. Some were disappointed by the lost potential. “Damn, well that sucks,” one Reddit user wrote. Another added, “A little disappointing.”

Others welcomed the decision. “Not everything needs reboots. We had enough. It’s okay to let things end and move on. We had 11 amazing seasons,” one fan commented. Another agreed: “Probably for the best. Not everything needs a reboot. And not all reboots work.”

One user pointed to the challenge of recreating the show’s tone today, writing, “For better or worse, you couldn’t properly make a ‘Married… With Children’ reboot.”

The show’s polarizing legacy may explain the divided response. With its sharp-edged humor, lasting fan base, and controversial history, “Married… With Children” continues to spark conversation — and for many, rewatching the original series is enough.
