A-list actress Glenn Close, 78, has enjoyed a remarkable career in Hollywood. However, she admits there’s a surprising regret in her life that has nothing to do with her over five decades in film and television.

In a recent conversation with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the actress revealed that she once missed a chance to pursue a romance with the iconic actor Robert Redford, a moment she realized could have led to something more.

Actress Glenn Close recently opened up about her romantic history, including reflecting on her three marriages that shaped her life and career, and shared a surprising missed moment with the late, great Robert Redford, who passed away in September at the age of 89.

Opening up on the “Wiser Than Me With Julia Louis-Dreyfus” podcast, Close detailed that Redford was pursuing her after the two starred in the 1984 baseball drama “The Natural.” However, Close didn’t read the signs, missing her chance at a romance with the A-lister.

“After we did ‘The Natural,’ Robert Redford invited me to a very romantic restaurant where we had dinner together,” she shared. “And I was too clueless and unknowing and unsure to even consider that I might have dated him. But he found Billy [Sibylle Szaggars, his widow]. But, yeah… It’s just because I didn’t know. I didn’t get it.”

In fact, while appearing on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen” in January, Close revealed that her favorite on-screen kiss was with Redford, despite only getting “to kiss him once.”

As Close mentioned in her conversation, Redford would go on to wed German visual artist and environmental activist Sibylle ‘Billy’ Szaggars in 2009, and was married to her until his death this year. Before marrying Szaggars, Redford was married to Lola Van Wagenen from 1958 until their divorce in 1985. The former couple had four children.

Close Opened up About Her Three Marriages

During their conversation, Close also reflected on her three marriages, candidly admitting that she carries regrets about those chapters in her life.

“I’ve been married three times and I shouldn’t have married any of them. But I had an empty tool box, so I’ve had to try to fill that tool box – as far as human relations and certainly relationships in a marriage – with nothing as a model,” she shared.

The “Fatal Attraction” star added, “So I’ve made a lot of mistakes. It was sad that I was so unknowing. I always chose the wrong man.”

Taking a deep dive into her three marriages, Close had a short-lived first marriage to guitarist Cabot Wade from 1969 to 1971. She later married businessman James Marlas from 1984 to 1987. Her third and final marriage was to David Shaw, whom she was married to from 2006 to 2015.

Close has not been involved with anyone since her amicable split from Shaw 10 years ago. While appearing on “The Drew Barrymore Show” in January, when the host asked Close if she “approached a relationship since divorce,” Close gave a solid “no,” adding, “I don’t know. I mean, I’m always up for anything, but I’m very happy right now.”

When asked if Close had ever tried dating apps, she joked, “Are you crazy?”

She added, “I’m not searching. Because I’m actually — I’m not a hugely comfortably social person, so I don’t leap to go to a party at all. So yeah, I’m okay.”
