The news of Terence Stamp’s death on Sunday, August 17, was met with an outpouring of love. Many have reflected on what the actor meant to them or how his career had an impact on their lives. Many would call the “Superman” actor their friend, but one of his most surprising friendships was with the late Princess Diana.

Stamp had a prolific career with roles in “Superman,” “The Collector,” and ”Far From The Madding Crowd,” but he also had a fascinating love life. But his bond with Princess Diana, who died on August 31, 1997, was entirely different.

He reflected on their relationship and how it started.

“The relationship came about because my friend Oliver Hoare, the art dealer, knew her,” Stamp said in 2017, Express reports. “I said, ‘I’d love to have a proper chat with her, why don’t you ask her if she’s up for it?’ He asked and she said yes. We got on amazingly well.”

He even cooked for the royal, making mushroom risotto. “It wasn’t a formal thing, we’d just meet up for a cup of tea, or sometimes we’d have a long chat for an hour, sometimes it would be very quick,” he said. “The time I spent with her was a good time.”

The late actor’s past relationships include Julie Christie and Jean Shrimpton. In 2002, he married Elizabeth O’Rourke. The couple divorced in 2008. It was different with Princess Diana and was never romantic, but Stamp’s comments about her suggest that he did care deeply for her.

“It wasn’t like that. I thought that was the last thing she needed really. She just wanted somebody to talk to that was a guy, who would give her objective opinions. And because of that we just kind of opened up to each other,” he said. “I saw the sadness in her because…she was a believer in the marriage and all that. And it didn’t turn out the way she expected it to.”

Stamp’s family revealed his death in a statement. “He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come,” the statement reads, Reuters reports. “We ask for privacy at this sad time.” He was 87.
