Adam Sandler Teams Up with George Clooney in New Film: VIDEO

Adam Sandler, George Clooney star in new movie

Hollywood heavyweights George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Laura Dern & Billy Crudup are joining forces for “Jay Kelly,” the latest project from acclaimed “Marriage Story” director Noah Baumbach. The film marks Baumbach’s first feature since 2022’s “White Noise.”

Jay Kelly Follows a Movie Star’s Emotional Journey Through Europe

“Everybody knows Jay Kelly, but Jay Kelly doesn’t know himself,” reads the film’s tagline—first shared in May, as reported by Variety.

In May, Netflix debuted the release date alongside a still of Clooney in character. The story follows Jay Kelly (played by Clooney) and his loyal manager Ron (played by Sandler) as they take off on a whirlwind journey across Europe.

What begins as a professional detour quickly becomes something deeper, as both men are forced to reflect on their choices, strained relationships, and the legacies they hope to leave behind.

Netflix released the official trailer on Tuesday, Aug. 5, teasing an emotional, character-driven comedy centered around Clooney’s character, a famous movie star in the middle of a personal reckoning.

Joining Clooney, Sandler & Dern in the ensemble cast are Riley Keough, Isla Fisher, Emily Mortimer, Patrick Wilson, Grace Edwards, Jim Broadbent, Eve Hewson, Stacy Keach, Alba Rohrwacher, Josh Hamilton, Nicôle Lecky, Thaddea Graham, Lenny Henry & Greta Gerwig—who also happens to be Baumbach’s wife and longtime collaborator.

Though Gerwig has stepped mainly into directing roles in recent years, most recently co-writing 2023’s “Barbie,” she reunites on screen with Baumbach in “Jay Kelly,” after appearing in “White Noise.” Mortimer co-wrote the screenplay with Baumbach.

Adam Sandler Opens Up About Bonding With George Clooney on Set

Adam Sandler opened up about what drew him to the project and to working with George Clooney. “My character loves George’s character so much, and I thought that would be fun to do and easy to do with George,” Sandler said, talking to Vanity Fair. “And as a guy who’s an actor who’d live a similar life to Jay Kelly, it’s a crazy depiction — how accurate a lot of it is.”

Throughout filming, the two stars developed a genuine bond off-screen as well.

“He invited my family everywhere, every place in Italy and England,” Sandler recalled. “Our trailers were next to each other. His friends and my friends all hung out, shot hoops, threw the baseball around, talked about other movies we like, other comedians that have made us laugh, his upbringing, my upbringing.”

A Life-Affirming, Bittersweet Story Hits Netflix in December

Jay Kelly has already drawn early comparisons to “Jerry Maguire.” In 2023, former Netflix executive Scott Stuber described it as “a really great life-affirming movie” and “an excellent kind of Jerry Maguire-esque” story.

Netflix echoed that sentiment, calling it “a heartbreaking comedy” on Tudum.

When To Watch The Star-Studded ‘Jay Kelly’?

The film will premiere in select theaters on Nov. 14, followed by a Netflix streaming debut on Dec. 5—just in time for awards season buzz.
