Alan Carr has finally addressed the churning rumour mill that has suggested he would be the perfect replacement for Tess Daly and/or Claudia Winkleman on Strictly Come Dancing.

The Celebrity Traitors victor himself was earlier this month reported to be in the running for the highly coveted BBC One ballroom floor gig.

The 49-year-old was a scene-stealer in the Scottish castle, with his one-liners and inability to do anything treacherous without having a little giggle.

It was thought he could soon bring that exuberance to take over from the Traitors’ host and Daly, who made a shock announcement last month that they will quit the job at the end of this series.

However, Carr has now addressed the speculation and – rather disappointingly – thrown cold water on it.

He clarified to the Radio Times: ‘Apparently my name is in the hat, which is an honour, but I haven’t spoken to anyone at the BBC.’

He added: ‘You saw how sweaty I was in the castle, imagine me live on a Saturday night coming down those stairs – people would slip in a pool of my sweat while doing the fandango.

‘It’s lovely to be thought of, but it’s probably a bit too nerve-racking.’

Carr also spoke about how he managed to take it all the way on Celebrity Traitors and win £87,500 for Neuroblastoma UK, after he hoodwinked the Faithful Nick Mohammed and David Olusoga into believing he was one of them during the finale.

Carr said he wanted to prove celebrities were capable of stabbing each other in the back (Picture: BBC/Studio Lambert/Cody Burridge/Matt Burlem)

He admitted there had been ‘naysayers’ of the celebrity version of the show, who assumed the famous faces would find it difficult ‘to stab their friends in the back’.

‘I thought: “Wait till you get a load of me!” I wanted to prove them wrong,’ he told the publication. ‘People underestimate celebrities, but it’s a hard business. I definitely turned a corner when I murdered Celia.

‘There was one funny bit that didn’t stay in, but at one roundtable, Stephen Fry said, “We have to think about the Cambridge spies. Philby, Blunt… they were flamboyant characters, camp but still under the radar.”

‘I’m sitting directly opposite, saying “Ooh I know!” and laughing.’

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday night on BBC One. The Celebrity Traitors is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
