Alex Rodriguez was one of the highest-paid Major League Baseball players of all time, so it’s no wonder he gave a young Patrick Mahomes career advice. The Kansas City Chiefs star ultimately did not listen to A-Rod’s words, and it turned out to be the right decision.

Young Patrick Mahomes Asked Alex Rodriguez for Advice

The former New York Yankee, 50, recalled meeting Mahomes when he was just 10 years old.

“Patrick Mahomes Sr., who used to play for the Mets, but he also played in Texas, he was my teammate,” Rodriguez told host Jimmy Fallon during a Sunday, October 26, appearance on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.”

According to Rodriguez, Mahomes Sr. was a “very lovable guy, everyone loved him, great arm.”

“He had a son and the son was about 10 years old. And every day, he would be shagging [baseballs] and in the batting cage,” he explained. “And he had these beautiful blue eyes. I mean, just such a respectful kid.”

The hall of famer explained that Mahomes Jr. asked him for advice for “30 days in a row.”

“Remember, he was a baseball star and a football star. So, I said, ‘Alright, Patrick,’ the last day, I said, ‘I’m gonna give you some good advice here. Now, listen up.’ And his eyes got really wide,” Rodriguez told Fallon. “I lowered my voice, and I said, ‘Alright, I know you like baseball, and I know you like football, but trust me when I say this — baseball is where the money is.’”

A-Rod continued, “I said, ‘Football’s just for fun, but you’re gonna make your money in baseball like your dad and I.’”

“I’m glad he didn’t take my advice!” he laughed.

Patrick Mahomes Becomes Highest-Paid NFL Player

Mahomes Jr. went on to become a star quarterback, playing at Texas Tech University before being drafted as the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. As of 2025, Mahomes has earned three Super Bowl rings and earned $78 million this year on and off the field, according to Forbes.

“He grew up in the clubhouse, he was always around the game, and he was always the best player on his baseball team,” Mahomes Sr. told the Los Angeles Times in 2023 of his son. “He was an unbelievable shortstop, he always led his team in hitting, and he threw 97 mph on the mound, so I always thought he was gonna be a baseball player.”

He added, “You can tell by the way Patrick plays quarterback that he took pieces of his basketball, the jump throws and no-look passes, and pieces of his baseball, the different arm angles, and he put it all together in a package in football.”
