Amazon Prime’s upcoming alt-fantasy period drama, My Lady Jane, retells the Tudor-era story of England’s infamous ‘Nine Days’ queen.
After the dizzying success of Netflix’s Bridgerton – an alternate universe Regency-era drama based on a bestselling book series and jampacked with steamy scenes – Prime is coming in strong with their must-watch period drama for the masses.
My Lady Jane – based on the popular novels by Cynthia Hand, Brodie Ashton and Jodi Meadows – turns the story of King Henry VII’s granddaughter, Lady Jane Grey’s (Emily Bader) tragic execution on its head in this quick-witted romantasy.
Instead of focusing on the dramatic last days of her tortured reign, the satirical eight-episode show instead imagines what her life could have looked like if she had survived (with a dash of magical realism for good measure).
After Jane’s hand is sold to the highest bidder, mysterious nobleman Guildford Dudley (Edward Bluemel), her hatred soon morphs into lust.
And she is not alone as the whole palace is gripped by salacious affairs and hot encounters (including a gay couple!).

Meanwhile, Jane finds herself caught up in a plot to kill King Edward (Jordan Peters) and navigating a court populated by conniving and overbearing noblemen such as Lord Seymour (Mamma Mia star Dominic Cooper) and Lord Dudley (comedian Rob Brydon).
The synopsis continues: ‘Are you ready for an epic tale of true love, high adventure, regicidal maniacs, deadpan heroism, devious intrigues, swashbuckling swordfights, a soupçon of magical realism and oodles of sex? Of course you are’.
An exclusive first-look clip sees various couples, including a queer couple, locking lips while the trailer promises a sensual shower scene as Lady Jane feasts her eyes upon her to-be-husband.
‘As you can see I still have my head,’ the re-imagined ruler says in the trailer. ‘I intend to keep it.’
And fans are already sharing their sheer excitement.
‘No one is prepared for the person I’m going to become when I can finally talk about this show,’ @GissaneSophia wrote on social media.
‘Have never read this book but damn this show looks like i’m gonna be obsessed with it for months i can’t wait to watch,’ @getaway_char added.

This genre of female-empowered, modern-inspired, historical retellings is all the rage right now from Bridgerton to West End’s Six to Apple TV+’s Dickinson and The Buccaneers.
In a 2018 interview, author Hand spoke about the inspiration behind reclaiming Jane’s heartbreaking Tudor-dynasty story.
She explained: ‘I wanted to write a novel about Lady Jane Grey, who was a strong-willed, bookish teenage girl in 16th-century England.
‘She had the misfortune to become Queen, but only for nine days and then had her head chopped off. I always loved studying Jane Grey’s story in history except for the ending. So, I thought, “Hey, I’m a writer. I can give her a different ending.”‘
My Lady Jane arrives on Amazon Prime Video on June 27. Bridgerton is available to stream on Netflix now.
