Amanda Seyfried has doubled down on comments she made about assassinated right-wing politician Charlie Kirk.
The conservative activist was shot dead in September while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem.
The 31-year-old had been credited with energising the Republican youth movement and helping Donald Trump win the 2024 election.
However, he had also been widely criticised for his conservative positions, including opposing abortion, gun control, diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, and LGBTQ rights.
Soon after his death Amanda – best known for her roles starring in films including Mean Girls and Mamma Mia – shared a post on social media in which she labelled him ‘hateful’.
After facing significant backlash, she later went on to share a statement, writing: ‘We’re forgetting the nuance of humanity. I can get angry about misogyny and racist rhetoric and ALSO very much agree that Charlie Kirk’s murder was absolutely disturbing and imaginable. No one should have to experience this level of violence. This country is grieving too many senseless and violent deaths and shootings. Can we agree on that at least?’
The actress, 40, also captioned the post: ‘I don’t want to add fuel to a fire. I just want to be able to give clarity to something so irresponsibly (but understandably) taken out of context. Spirited discourse- isn’t that what we should be having?’
A few months on, she’s refused to back down about her commentary on Kirk.
In an interview with Who What Wear, she declared: ‘I’m not f***ing apologising for that. I mean, for f***’s sake, I commented on one thing.
‘I said something that was based on actual reality and actual footage and actual quotes. What I said was pretty damn factual, and I’m free to have an opinion, of course.’
After feeling her initial comment had been taken out of context, she added: ‘Thank God for Instagram. I was able to give some clarity, and it was about getting my voice back because I felt like it had been stolen and recontextualized—which is what people do, of course.’
Soon after Amanda’s latest comments were published, she was met with support by those who said her remarks were justified.
‘She’s 100% correct. He has said some extremely hateful things. Being killed doesn’t change that. Facts are facts,’ Ryan posted on X.
‘Standing firm in your words takes courage. If you speak from facts and conviction, there’s nothing to apologise for in the first place,’ Gina commented.
‘People love calling women “hateful” the moment they push back against a public figure. But if your own rhetoric is on tape, that’s not slander — that’s accountability,’ user postixzer added.
However, this week former Selling Sunset star Christine Quinn has also drawn the ire some after taking aim at Kirk’s widow Erika.
Since her husband’s death, Erika has taken over her husband’s political organisation Turning Point USA and has been travelling across the United States promoting his posthumous book, Stop, in the Name of God: Why Honoring the Sabbath Will Transform Your Life.
Addressing Erika’s packed scheduled, Christine shared on X: ‘Erika Kirk be everywhere but with her kids.’
Although many backed her comments, others accused the reality star of being ‘hateful’ herself.
Before and following his death, Kirke’s rhetoric was described as divisive, racist, xenophobic, and extreme.
In the wake of his killing, many celebrities shared their reactions online – with Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show notably taken off air after he commented on the circumstances of the shooting.
On an episode of his show, he said the following about Kirk’s alleged killer: ‘We had some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and with everything they can to score political points from it.’
During his return to screens, Kimmel later shared: ‘‘It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man. I don’t think there’s anything funny about it.’
Tyler Robinson, 22, is facing multiple charges, including aggravated murder, after being accused of assassinating Kirk.
