Amazon Prime Video was forced to pull the AI recap of Fallout season one after fans noticed major inaccuracies.
Spoilers ahead for Fallout season one.
The acclaimed sci-fi thriller starring Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins is set in a post-apocalyptic world of the late 23rd century, over 200 years after the Great War of 2077, which brought about a nuclear holocaust.
Now, some dregs of humanity live in underground bunkers known in a strange retrofuturistic world. After an inciting incident, one of the residents, Lucy (Ella), decides to breach the surface as she sets out on a dangerous quest to find her kidnapped father.
The show, based on the hit video games, was an instant hit for the streamer, with the first season raking in over 100 million viewers and securing its place as one of the most popular original shows ever.
With the release of the second season less than a week away, viewers new and old will be brushing up on what happened in season one.
In an ironic turn of events, Amazon Prime appear to have stumbled upon its own technological scandal after putting up an AI season one recap riddled with inaccuracies – leading to its removal.
As one Reddit user pointed out, when discussing one of the key characters, Ghoul (Walton), the AI voiceover claimed the flashback took place in the 1950s, getting the date wrong by over 100 years (the scene actually occurred in 2077).
In another error, it mischaracterised the season one climax, making it seem as though Lucy has to make a life-or-death choice rather than happily deciding to team up with The Ghoul (aka Cooper) to track down Hank (Kyle MacLachlan).
One fan, X user lucks_eterna, wrote: ‘Don’t bother watching it, it’s AI slop that gets several details wrong like the flashbacks being set in the 1950s and “Cooper offers Lucy a choice in the finale: die, or join him” phrased as if he’d be the one to kill her.’
Fallout season one finale recap
After Lucy’s world in the Vaults beneath a nuclear-devastated LA is shattered when her father, Hank, is kidnapped, she spends eight episodes attempting to find him – coming across difficult truths along the way.
She meets bounty hunter The Ghoul, who was known as Cooper Howard before the nuclear apocalypse. We discover that his wife worked with Hank at Vault-Tec in the beforetimes, before he was cryogenically frozen.
It is revealed Vault-Tec are the ones that dropped the nukes that devastated the world.
As she slowly starts to piece together that there is far more to her father than she ever knew she is faced with a choice at the end of season one.
Stay with her love, Maximus, or join Ghoul on his travels. She chooses the latter, which tips us into the start of the second season as she continues her quest.
Another user, Rae, called it ‘gross’, and Sarie agreed it was ‘ridiculous’.
‘Lowkey can’t believe Amazon’s AI got a Fallout recap so wrong it got pulled, what’s the point of AI if it’s not accurate?’ higanste asked.
‘All it would have taken is one person to watch it from start to finish to realise it wasn’t correct. Just one person who knows the story of the first season. They didn’t even need to know the lore of the games. Just the first season,’ BewareNixonsGhost slammed over on Reddit.
‘What an embarrassment,’ hamlet-sandwich agreed.
The platform announced in November that it was rolling out the feature across original titles.
‘Video Recaps marks a groundbreaking application of generative AI for streaming,” said Gérard Medioni, vice president of technology at Prime Video.
‘This first-of-its-kind feature demonstrates Prime Video’s ongoing commitment to innovation and making the viewing experience more accessible and enjoyable for customers.’
The official website explains exactly how these recaps are pieced together ‘with the help of generative AI’.
They aim to feature ‘key plot points and character arcs to deeply understand the most pivotal moments that will resonate with viewers as they enter the next season’.
As for the second season, Prime Video shares that the ‘new season will pick up in the aftermath of season one’s epic finale, taking audiences along for a journey through the wasteland of the Mojave to the post-apocalyptic city of New Vegas.’
Several companies are facing AI scandals as of late. Last month, Coca-Cola came under fire for using AI for the Christmas advert for a second year in a row.
Meanwhile, earlier this week McDonalds was forced to axe its AI_generated festive advert after sustained backlash.
Metro has reached out to Amazon Prime Video for comment.
Fallout season one is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video now. Season two premieres on December 17.
