Sex and the City and its reboot, And Just Like That…, are all about love, friendship, and fashion, but the real estate has always been pretty important, too. Over the past 27 years, fans have seen some amazing apartments, including Charlotte York’s Park Avenue classic six, Carrie and Big’s “heaven on Fifth” that never was, and Samantha’s Meatpacking District loft. There have also been some absolute dumps, like the basement apartment on the corner of “West Shit Street” that Steve Brady almost lived in. And Just Like That… just brought in new competition for the best pad in the series, though. In the most recent episode, Adam Karma revealed that he lives in a rent-controlled loft with breathtaking views of the city. As it turns out, that is no set. The apartment is very real and so is its backstory, kind of.

Adam Karma’s apartment was not a set

And Just Like That…, and its predecessor, Sex and the City, have been praised for the decision to use New York City as a supporting character. The show often films on the streets of the city, and includes important landmarks in each episode. Not everything can be filmed in real locations, though. Several of the apartments we see regularly are built out on soundstages. That wasn’t the case for Adam Karma’s apartment.

Adam, a gardener whom Carrie hired to revamp her patio, shows off his space to Seema Patel, including a sweeping view of the city, in episode 10 of the show’s final season. The views and the apartment are real. The scenes were filmed at Westbeth, a historic artist complex. According to the show’s official Instagram pages, the unit was vacant when filming took place. The complex is situated in the Far West Village and spans an entire city block. It is bound by West Street, Bethune Street, Washington Street, and Bank Street. The neighborhood, vibrant and eclectic, offers a waterfront feel with sweeping views of Lower Manhattan.

The artist colony Adam Karma spoke about is very much a real thing

In explaining his origin story, Adam revealed to Seema that he only paid $900 per month because his mother, a potter, had been given the chance to live in the creative collective decades ago. After her passing, he continued to maintain the unit. Adam explained that the apartment building was part of an artist colony. While some And Just Like That… fans might think it was a made-up backstory, it is not. While Adam isn’t real, the artist colony he spoke of is. In fact, Westbeth, where the scenes were filmed, is a well-known location.

Westbeth Artists’ Housing is a landmark reuse project in Manhattan’s Far West Village. The project, completed in 1970, transformed the former Bell Telephone Laboratories site into a live-work complex for artists. Bell Labs vacated the campus in 1966 after nearly 70 years of innovation. According to Village Preservation, the J. M. Kaplan Fund and the National Endowment for the Arts launched a plan in 1967 to convert the abandoned complex into affordable housing and studios for artists. The redesign created more than 300 apartments and studio spaces for artists and their families. It was the first subsidized artist collective in the United States. Vin Diesel grew up in the artist colony, and Robert De Niro Sr. also lived in the complex. Today, it continues to serve the art community, with an overhaul of the campus’ infrastructure currently underway.
