An Apple TV crime drama starring Hollywood actress Emma Thompson has been tipped as the ‘next Slow Horses’ – with its premiere date set for October.

Down Cemetery Road – which also stars Ruth Wilson – will follow the story of Wilson’s character Sarah Tucker, who hires private investigator Zoe Boehm (Thompson) following an explosion in a quiet Oxford suburb.

The explosion claims the lives of two people and results in the disappearance of a young girl – a disappearance that Tucker quickly becomes obsessed with.

However, working against Tucker and Boehm are the suspicious duo Hamza (Adeel Akhtar) and Joe Silverman (Adam Godley), who seem to know something about the vanishing girl.

Based on the 2003 novel of the same name, which was written by Slow Horses author Mick Herron, Down Cemetery Road is set to drop on Apple TV+ on October 29.

A synopsis reads: ‘When a house explodes in a quiet Oxford suburb and a girl disappears in the aftermath, neighbour Sarah Tucker becomes obsessed with finding her.

‘She enlists the help of private investigator Zoe Boehm – they suddenly find themselves in a complex conspiracy that reveals that people long believed dead are still among the living, while the living are fast joining the dead.’

In the trailer, a character is warned that she is entering ‘shark-infested waters’ in which there are ‘no rescue boats,’ pointing towards the danger ahead.

Despite all the intensity, death, and explosions, the trailer also shows that Down Cemetery Road has a lighter tone, with Thompson and Wilson’s comedic dynamic getting plenty of opportunities to shine.

In keeping with Apple TV+’s usual release schedule, each new episode of Down Cemetery Road will be dropped on a weekly basis, starting next month.

The series will consist of eight episodes – the premiere is set for UK release on October 29, while the season finale is slated to drop on December 10.

Down Cemetery Road has already received comparisons to Slow Horses because both shows are based on novels written by 62-year-old author Mick Herron.

Speaking about her role to TV Insider, Ruth Wilson said: ‘I love Slow Horses, so it was the opportunity to also be in that Mick Herron world… there was a lot of space to create Sarah Tucker..’

Ruth also revealed that a chance to work with Emma Thompson was an opportunity she couldn’t turn down: ‘She’s such a good energy on set. She’s so brilliant. She’s kind of playful and easy, and everything is just fun.

‘ I’ve loved her work for so long, so, managing to work alongside her and be with her and find some really quirky dynamic between the two characters was really fun.’

Watch Down Cemetery Road on AppleTV+ from October 29.
