If you’re looking for a new thriller to sink your teeth into this week, look no further.

The BBC has dropped all four episodes of The Guest on iPlayer, letting viewers binge the tense psychological thriller in one go.

The synopsis from the Beeb reads: ‘The Guest is a propulsive, twisting thriller that centres on the intense, toxic relationship between cleaner, Ria (Gabrielle Creevy), and her mysterious employer, Fran (Eve Myles).

‘As the two women’s lives become intertwined by shared secrets, an obsessive co-dependence emerges that ultimately threatens to become dangerous and manipulative – a psychological game of cat-and-mouse.’

Writer Matthew Barry was inspired by 90s thrillers like The Hand That Rocks the Cradle and Pacific Heights, while Ria’s character is ‘deeply tied to class disparity’.

‘I wanted to create a fun, twisty thriller, but with the unique perspective of a working-class character,’ he told the BBC.

While the mini-series certainly sounds dark, Matthew insisted he always ‘wanted the tone to be character-driven and layered with humour’.

More BBC thrillers to binge

Here are some more tense thrillers free to watch on BBC iPlayer:

  • Ragdoll
  • Apple Never fall
  • The Jetty
  • The Woman in the Wall
  • Wolf
  • Vigil
  • Killing Eve

‘I think sometimes mixing drama and comedy can be risky, but I believe it’s essential. The Sopranos is my favourite drama, and it’s also my favourite comedy, so I think life itself is a balance of both,’ he explained.

‘With The Guest, I’ve tried to balance the thrills, twists, and scares with a deeper character-driven story and a tone that feels both interesting and authentic.’

Gone Girl was also an influence (Picture: Quay Street Productions/BBC)

White Lines director Ashley Way is at the helm, and he was influenced by the likes of Gone Girl to create the right mood.

‘We started to set the look by looking at other female lead thrillers, things like Gone Girl, lots of work by David Fincher and psychological thrillers,’ he said.

‘That lent us a certain style and aesthetic, as we wanted it to be very cinematic. We wanted it to be an elevated look, That world needed to be alluring and seductive, so it had to have this alluring, seductive style to it.’

The Guest airs tonight (September 1) at 9pm on BBC One. All episodes are already available to stream on iPlayer.
