Beloved Actor & Son of Old Hollywood Icon Passes Away — He Will Be Missed

Jim Mitchum has died. He was 84. The news of Mitchum’s passing was shared by a family spokesperson on October 3, Deadline reports.

Mitchum died at his ranch home in Skull Valley, Arizona, on September 20, but his passing was only shared publicly weeks later. His wife Pamela K. Smith and their beloved pet poodle were at his side when he passed away, Deadline reports. The actor is also survived by his children, stepchildren, and grandchildren. His children are listed as daughter Ana Liljeback, son Will Spence Mitchum, stepdaughter Tiffany Mitchum Greene, son Brian Price Mitchum, and daughter Caitlin Ann Mitchum. 

Some fans may remember Mitchum for his earlier acting work, including the 1958 classic, “Thunder Road,” in which he starred with his father, Robert Mitchum. Jim was just 16 at the time of the film.

Jim started acting when he was eight years old. His film debut was the 1949 Western “Colorado Territory,” starring Dorothy Malone, Joel McCrea, and Virginia Mayo. He retired from acting in 1994 and relocated to Arizona to focus on his parents’ horse ranch, the New York Post reports. His father, Robert, died in 1994. He was 79. Jim’s mother, Dorothy Spence, died in 2014. She was 94. 

Jim also had a brief career as a singer and was friends with Elvis Presley, Deadline reports.

Fans have shared their thoughts in the comment section of an article on the New York Post announcing the actor’s death. Many have remarked on the similarities between Jim and Robert, noting that father and son not only looked alike but also acted similarly. 

“He really looked like his old man! Robert Mitchum was an excellent actor and often underrated,” a comment reads. “I remember watching a movie and only realizing maybe half way through that it was JAMES Mitchum not ROBERT Mitchum playing the part,” another fan wrote. “He looked and acted so much like his father.”

“Condolences to the family and friends of Jim Mitchum,” a third person shared. 

Others remembered JIm’s work in “Thunder Road.” A comment reads, “He certainly looked much like his dad, enjoyed both of them in Thunder Road. Blessings to all that were touched by this man during his life.”
