Fan-favourite BBC drama The Split’s return date has officially been confirmed, and we can’t wait.

The Christmas TV schedule is already packed full of returning favourites, from Outnumbered to Gavin and Stacey, and now the Defoes are also reuniting.

Nicola Walker and Stephen Mangan are returning as Hannah and Nathan for a two-part special of Abi Morgan’s hit legal drama.

This time, they’ll be swapping the high-end London skylines for sunny Barcelona, with the special episodes exploring ‘love, legacy and modern marriage’.

They’ll also encompass ‘break-ups, reunions and like all good weddings, plenty of romance’, the BBC teased.

It’s now been confirmed that the episodes will air on Sunday 29 and Monday 30 December, and both available on BBC iPlayer from Sunday.

The Split is making a comeback two years after the third (and what was thought to be the final) season, which ended on a newly-divorced Hannah coming to terms with being single again.

Returning cast include Annabel Scholey, Fiona Button, Deborah Findlay, Elizabeth Roberts and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, as well as new stars Ian McElhinney and Alex Guersman.

Abi previously teased what we can expect from the specials, saying: ‘In a world of brutal break ups and tantalising make ups, the Defoe family are invited to a destination wedding of their own, promising all that audiences have grown to love about The Split.

‘Problematic prenups, scandalous wedding crashers, and low flying marriage proposals, as rom com meets gone wrong, in a chaotic and riotous weekend that guarantees to crack open the heart, before the last of the guests have gone home.’

It had been thought the finale in 2022 would be the last time we saw the Defoe family, though Deborah, who plays Defoe family matriarch Ruth, previously teased the story ‘isn’t over yet’.

Chatting to Metro in 2022, she shared: ‘I don’t think the story’s over yet. I think the series is over, but I don’t think… there’s a lot more to go with everybody’s character, which is why it’s so brilliant. And certainly think Ruth might do different things if there was a future world.’

When Nicola confirmed production was underway in May this year with a behind-the-scenes picture alongside her on-screen sisters, fans were left ecstatic.
