In a rare and emotional update, actor Tim Curry is opening up about the stroke that nearly took his life. The “Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” star, 79, reflected on his 2012 paralytic stroke in his new memoir, Vagabond, revealing how quick thinking from his masseuse saved him.
âI did not fade to black. I did not even feel out of sorts, or like something was very wrong,â Curry wrote, according to Daily Mail. âIn fact, I had no idea that anything was off at all.â
The actor recalled that he initially thought his masseuse was âoverreactingâ by calling an ambulance after noticing something was wrong. âI probably owe my life to the fact that he ignored me, went with his instinct, and called an ambulance,â Curry shared.
A Life-Altering Diagnosis

Curry later learned that he had suffered a serious stroke that caused blood clots in his brain. âBiologically, such clots really clog up the works â youâre not getting sufficient blood flow, so your brain isnât receiving the oxygen it needs,â he explained.
As per the Daily Mail, Doctors performed a craniectomy to relieve pressure on his brain, and only after the procedure did Curry realize how close he had come to dying. Despite surviving, the stroke left him partially paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair.
Finding Gratitude After a Devastating Setback

Though his mobility remains limited, Curry said he feels grateful for what he has regained, particularly his speech. âAfter several weeks of limited speech, which were hell for me, I made a full vocal recovery,â he wrote.
The actor, who originated the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, has since continued working through voice acting roles in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, SpongeBob SquarePants video games, and Barbie movies. He even returned to Rocky Horror in 2016 to voice the Criminologist in a televised remake.
Reflecting on Life 13 Years Later
At a 50th anniversary screening of The “Rocky Horror Picture Show” held at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles, Curry addressed his ongoing recovery. âI still canât walk, which is why Iâm in this silly chair, and thatâs very limiting,â he told the audience. âSo I wonât be singing and I wonât be dancing very soon. I still have real problems with my left leg.â
Still, the beloved actor remains optimistic and grateful for the second chance he was given. âItâs remarkable Iâm still alive,â Curry said. âAnd for that, Iâm very thankful.â
