Beloved NYT Best-Selling Author Passes Away & Stephen King Sends Tribute

Greg Iles’s books ring bells in the literary world thanks to titles such as “Natchez Burning,” “Southern Man,” and “The Quiet Game.” Sadly, fans of his works are in mourning as he passed away on August 15 after a battle with cancer. Lles was 65 years old. Many are taking to social media to pay tribute to the beloved writer, including Stephen King.

According to The Associated Press, Iles had been suffering from multiple myeloma for decades before his death. Notably, multiple myeloma is a cancer that negatively impacts plasma cells. The beloved author was diagnosed with the condition in 1996 but kept it private until 2024. Lles was born in Germany but moved to Mississippi when he was just three years old. 


King & Countless Fans are Paying Tribute to Iles Upon His Passing

Like millions of readers, King is mourning the loss of Iles. King took to his official X account on August 15 and said, “Greg Iles, bestselling writer and lead guitarist of a group of writers known as the Rock Bottom Remainders, has died at the unfair age of 65. He was a hell of a writer and a hell of a player. He was also a good friend, and he’ll be missed.”

Another fan, Vicki St Clair, posted, “Very sad to hear we’ve lost Greg Illes. A great southern storyteller and #1 NYT bestselling author. RIP, age 65.”

Sid Salter wrote on the platform, “Greg Iles leaves a rich legacy in his writings, which includes the ‘Natchez Burning Trilogy’ and his final book, the political thriller, “Southern Man.” His adaptation of the very real Frank Morris murder in 1964 into his novels was brave and noble, as was his blood cancer battle.”

The Mutant Fam wrote, “The #MutantFam would like to salute author Greg Iles, who passed away yesterday at the age of 65. He will be missed in the literary world. #MutantBookClub.”


He Leaves Behind a Massive Legacy

According to Harper Collins, Iles published his first book, “Spandau Phoenix,” in 1993. Like many of his works, it became a New York Times best-seller. Following his debut, Iles published an impressive 17 novels and one novella. This includes the number one New York Times best-seller, “The Devil’s Punchbowl.”

As King mentioned in his tribute, Iles was also a musician. He was a member of the rock group The Rock Bottom Remainders, for which he played the guitar. Iles leaves behind his wife, Caroline, and their four children. He will be missed.
