
Jack Shepherd, the veteran English actor who became a fixture on British television through his leading role in the ITV detective drama âWycliffe,â has died at 85. His family confirmed the news with PA news agency, as reported by The Independent, on Tuesday, and said he passed away after a short illness.
Born in Leeds, Shepherd earned a loyal following for his steady, understated portrayal of Cornish detective Charles Wycliffe.
He led the crime series from 1993 to 1998, guiding viewers through complex murder investigations set against the Cornwall landscape.
The drama, adapted from WJ Burleyâs novels, paired Shepherd with Jimmy Yuill as DI Doug Kersey and Helen Masters as DI Lucy Lane.

“It is with great sadness we can confirm that the celebrated actor Jack Shepherd passed away yesterday at the age of 85. He died peacefully in hospital after a short illness. His wife and family were with him,” the statement read, as published by The Independent.
They continued, “Markham, Froggatt & Irwin are very proud and honoured to have been part of Jackâs illustrious career. His passing is a sad loss to us all. Jack is survived by his wife Ann Scott and children Jan, Jake, Victoria, Catherine and Ben.”

Shepherd studied fine art at Newcastle University before training at The Central School for Speech and Drama in London. His stage career began in his twenties, when he became a prominent figure at the Royal Court Theatre.
On television, he gained major recognition in the 1970s for his performance as Bill Brand, a rebellious Labour MP, in the acclaimed series âBill Brand.â The role earned him a BAFTA nomination for best actor in 1977.
He continued to build a steady presence on screen through dramas, films and character roles that showcased his range.

Beyond acting, Shepherd was a prolific stage talent. He performed at the National Theatre and directed âThe Two Gentlemen of Veronaâ at Shakespeareâs Globe in 1996, a production that later reached Broadway. He also appeared in the 2007 fantasy film âThe Golden Compass,â starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig.
