Ben Affleck’s Kids Are Tough on His Films: ‘They Don’t Censor Their Criticism’

Teenagers are a tough crowd, there’s no denying it. Once kids reach a certain age, their opinion of their parents often changes drastically. The kid who once wanted to dress the same, hold your hand in public, and do everything with you finds everything you do embarrassing and ‘uncool.’ For actors, that disdain often extends to their films, as well.

For Ben Affleck, his three children with ex-wife Jennifer Garner — Violet, 19, Seraphina, 16, and Samuel, 13 — are his harshest critics. While that kind of honesty can be challenging to take, there is a positive side: if they like it, it must be something special.

They Got Brutally Honest About ‘Armageddon’

“They don’t censor their criticism,” Affleck told Jimmy Kimmel on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

“They’ll sit right next to me watching a movie and while it’s happening [say], ‘This is terrible. I mean, this is terrible. Why did you do this?’” The Golden Globe winner said.

“All the kids were in the house [during quarantine] and I was like, ‘Hey, let’s watch a movie,’” Affleck recalled. He chose his film, Armageddon. “Almost immediately, it was like, ‘What? What is this? … Are you kidding me?’

“My son was like, ‘This doesn’t make sense,’” he continued. “[I replied], ‘This is not a logic-based film! That is not one of the criteria we used making this!’”

They Acted as if He Got ‘Lucky’ With His Latest Film

The 52-year-old Oscar winner brought both his and Jennifer Lopez’s kids to the premiere of The Accountant 2, and he was caught off guard by their response. “They liked it,” he told Kimmel.

“I was like, ‘What? You really liked it?’” Affleck recalled. “They’re like, ‘Yeah, it was good.’ They were shocked as if I got lucky, like this magical accident happened and something I did was OK!”
