Ben Stiller Jumps In to Defend Star Against Criticism

Paul Dano and Ben Stiller in "Escape at Dannemora" tour

Ben Stiller is standing firmly behind Paul Dano after comments from director Quentin Tarantino sparked widespread reaction across Hollywood. During an appearance on “The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast,” Tarantino critiqued Dano’s work in “There Will Be Blood,” calling the actor the film’s “big, giant flaw” and describing him as “weak” and “uninteresting.” His remarks surprised many, given Dano’s long-standing reputation as a respected character actor with a wide range of acclaimed roles.

Stiller, who directed Dano in the Showtime series “Escape at Dannemora,” was one of the first major figures to respond publicly. Posting on X, he pushed back on Tarantino’s assessment with a clear message of support, writing, “Paul Dano is f-ing brilliant,” per Page Six. Stiller and Dano built a strong working relationship while developing the psychological dynamics and character depth that defined the series, making Stiller’s defense both personal and professional.

His message helped spark a wave of encouragement from actors, directors and collaborators who have worked with Dano throughout his career.

Even former co-stars joined the conversation.
