The news broke on October 11 that beloved actress Diane Keaton had sadly passed away at the age of 79. Now, Hollywood and her legion of fans are paying tribute to the “Annie Hall” actress. This includes Ben Stiller, who never worked with Keaton but clearly had a great deal of respect for the actress.

Stiller said on X, “Diane Keaton. One of the greatest film actors ever. An icon of style, humor, and comedy. Brilliant. What a person.”


Details of Keaton’s Passing are Sparse

According to PEOPLE, Keaton passed away in California on October 11. A spokesperson said, “There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness.”

The beloved actress leaves behind two children. They are Dexter, who is 29, and Duke, who is 25. Keaton adopted Dexter in 1996 and Duke in 2001. She was also the proud owner of at least one dog. In fact, her final Instagram post included her golden retriever.

She was born in Los Angeles in 1946. Her father was a civil engineer, and her mother was a stay-at-home mom. She was the oldest of four children.

In additon to Stiller, many fans of her work are paying tribute to her legacy. One person on X wrote, “Oh no. Diane Keaton has died. One of the all-time greats. Can’t think of many actors who had as much on-screen charm as she did. It’s so sad to see people you grew up really loving passing away.
Rest in peace.”

Someone else said, “We’ve lost Diane Keaton and Robert Redford within a month of each other. It seems impossible.”


She Leaves Behind a Celebrated Legacy

According to IMDb, Keaton appeared in well over 75 roles throughout her legendary acting career. One of her first on-screen roles came in 1970 when she portrayed Joan in “Lovers and Other Strangers.” However, one of the roles she’s most known for, Kay Adams in “The Godfather,” came two years after.

Of course, Keaton had the esteemed honor of winning an Oscar for her work on screen. This came due to her appearance in “Annie Hall” in 1977. She’s also beloved for appearing in films such as 2003’s “Something’s Gotta Give,” 2005’s “The Family Stone,” and 1981’s “Reds.”

Her most recent film appearance was in 2024’s “Summer Camp,” which also starred Josh Peck, Alfre Woodard, Betsy Sodaro, and Kathy Bates. The beloved actress also had three projects in pre-production. They are “Artist in Residence,” “Constance,” and “The Making Of.”
