Udo Kier, a German actor who worked with numerous icons, including Andy Warhol, has tragically passed away at the age of 81, Variety reports. The news was confirmed to the outlet by Kier’s partner, Delbert McBride, who said that he died on Sunday morning.
Kier’s career spanned across six decades, having had roles in more than 200 projects.
Tributes Pour In For Udo Kier
“Iâm at a loss for words. It all happened far too suddenly,” Japanese video game designer Hideo Kojima wrote on Instagram. “Because of the strike, we werenât able to shoot ‘OD’ for a long time, and we were forced to reschedule to next year. Even during that time, Udo and I exchanged emails frequently. We stayed in close contact. When we met in Milan at the end of September, he told me how much he was looking forward to the shoot starting up again next year. He was full of energy then too, making me laugh with his usual ‘Udo-isms.’”
“I still canât believe this. Udo wasnât just an actor. He was truly an ‘icon’ of his time. Weâve lost a great ‘icon.’ There will never be another like him,” Kojima continued. “Udo, rest in peace. I will never forget you.”
Producer Stephen Israel, who worked with Kier on the 2021 film “Swan Song” also posted a nice message.
The world has lost an icon, and I lost a dear friend,” he wrote on Facebook. “Godspeed Udo: until we meet again. Iâll bring the Pinot Grigio. Chilled”
Udo Kier’s Legacy
Having had roles in so many incredible films, Udo Kier’s legacy will live on.
He is well known for his starring roles in 1973âs âFlesh for Frankensteinâ and 1974âs âBlood for Dracula,” which helped launch his career. In 1991, he had a role in “My Own Private Idaho,â which is a film that is somewhat based on Shakespeareâs âHenry IV.â Kier also worked with Lars von Trier, having played roles in both film and television projects. In the 1990s, he was in “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,â âArmageddonâ and âBlade.â
Kier also worked with Madonna, having appeared in her book in 1992 along with appearances in two of her music videos.
âI liked the attention, so I became an actor,â Kier said in a 2024 interview with Variety.
âIâm not an actor who is happy to get a script and do exactly what is written. That would be boring. I have to bring something of my own personality into the film,” he later added.
