
Govardhan Asrani, a legend in Hindi cinema who appeared in hundreds of films, has died.
The Indian actor and director, 84, who appeared in over 350 Hindi and Gujarati films, has died after a prolonged illness.
‘The one who brought smiles to everyone’s faces, Asrani ji is no longer among us. His passing is an irreparable loss for both Hindi cinema and our hearts,’ his family said in a statement posted on the actor’s social media account.
Asrani’s manager, Babubhai Thiba, reportedly announced: ‘Asrani passed away today at 3PM at Arogya Nidhi Hospital, Juhu.
‘He is survived by his wife, sister, and nephew.’
No cause of death has yet been announced, but it has been reported that he was hospitalised in Mumbai before his death.
Asrani was best known for his role as the jailer in Sholay and Amadavad no Rikshavaro, with younger fans remembering him for voicing Zazu in the Hindi voiceover for The Lion King, a role that was voiced by Rowan Atkinson in the English language version of the film.
Tributes have been pouring in for the late actor, with many remembering his impactful work.

The Film and Television Institute of India said: ‘We are deeply saddened by the passing of veteran actor, teacher, and distinguished FTII alumnus Mr. Govardhan Asrani.
‘Our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and countless admirers. May his soul rest in peace.’

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar said on X: ‘Speechless with grief at the passing of Asrani ji. We had just shared the warmest of hugs just a week back at the shoot of Haiwaan. Bahot pyare insaan the…he had the most legendary comic timing. From all my cult films Hera Pheri to Bhagam Bhag to De Dana Dan, Welcome and now our unreleased Bhoot Bangla and Haiwaan…I had worked and learned so much from him.
‘What an absolute loss to our industry. God bless you Asrani Sir, for giving us a million reasons to laugh. Om Shanti.’

The actor had an active acting career for the majority of his life, taking on his first role in 1967 in the film Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan, in which he played the friend of actor Biswajeet.
He had a variety of roles, mostly comedic and supporting in the 1970s.
In the 1980s, he acted in 107 Hindi films which were typically more minor roles as the character of the comedian was phased out of the genre.
In 1982, Asrani set up a small Gujarati production company which was dissolved in 1996 with a large profit.
The actor also worked as a director in several films including Salaam Memsaab and Chala Murari Hero Banne, both of which he also appeared in.
He last appeared on screen in 2023 in Dream Girl 2 and Non Stop Dhamaal, but is set to appear in two more films posthumously. Haiwaan and Bhoot Bangla are both set to be released in 2026.
Speaking to BBC Hindi, Asrani said he was proud of the recognition he received for his comedic timing, but didn’t think of himself as a ‘comic’. Instead, he felt he was an ‘artist who finds truth in every role..
