Brendan Fraser Reveals the Secret to Learning Japanese for His New Film

Brendan Fraser, Rental Family

Brendan Fraser is one of the most beloved actors. This is thanks to modern-day classics such as “The Mummy,” as well as his later films like “The Whale.” Now, his new movie, “Rental Family,” has him back in the spotlight. He recently opened up about learning Japanese for the film.

According to PEOPLE, Fraser attended the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6. While here, he participated in a Q&A session for his new film, “Rental Family.” When asked about learning Japanese, he admitted that he’s “not a very good student, but I’m an excellent mimic.”

Fraser continued, “So what you, of course, didn’t see through the magic of editing, people were feeding me lines as I was making them sound as if they were my own.” The beloved actor also said that he became “really good at it really fast.” He also credited his Japanese co-stars, who “took such good care of me.”

He then said that “the fundamentals” of acting helped him overcome the barriers of speaking a different language on camera. According to him, “it doesn’t matter what you’re saying verbally — it’s the intention behind it, and we should be able to communicate with one another no matter what languages we speak.”

Fraser’s ‘Rental Family’ Hits Theaters this Year

Fraser’s new film, “Rental Family,” premiered on September 6 at the Toronto International Film Festival. Directed by Hikari, the film centers around an American actor whom a Japanese agency hires to play stand-in roles for strangers. It’s set to debut in movie theaters on November 21, 2025.

So far, Fraser’s new movie is a hit with early audiences. It boasts an impressive 100% rating on the Rotten Tomatoes platform. Of course, this is based on only 10 reviews. One critic gave it a 9 out of 10 rating, saying, “Rental Family is the perfect feel-good movie of the year for me, bringing tear-jerking and heartwarming feelings to my soul.”

Another critic wrote, “Hikari doesn’t shy away from some of the moral thorniness. How do we know that our actions will represent our intentions, when so much of what we feel is deeply internalized instead of being communicated out loud?”

His Career is Going Strong

Fraser has quite a bit to celebrate regarding his more recent career. One of his most critically acclaimed movies, “The Whale,” was released in 2022. In many ways, this served as a comeback for the beloved actor. Notably, he won an Oscar for the role the following year.

Now, in addition to “Rental Family,” he also has an upcoming role in a film called “Pressure,” in which he will play Dwight D. Eisenhower. He’s also set to star in a thriller called “Assassination.”
