Speaking in an interview with BBC News at the unveiling of a statue honoring the Bridget Jones character, which was also attended by Zellweger earlier this week, Fielding gave some insight into whether the series has a future.

When asked about the possibility of future “Bridget Jones” films, Fielding was clear that she was not completely shutting the book and did not rule out the possibility of continuing the story.

“Never say never,” she said. “Stories come to you as a writer. So if a story came to me that I thought was true and interesting and new then I would write it.”

Fielding wrote the original novels that the movies were based on and has also been heavily involved in the films. She has been a producer and scriptwriter on all of the films, including the 2025 release “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” that saw Hugh Grant reprise his role following the death of Colin Firth’s character Mark Darcy.

Fans Want To See a Return

At the same event, BBC News reporters spoke to fans who were there to see the statue being unveiled as well as catch a glimpse of some of the cast and crew. It is clear from these fans that there is an appetite to see more of Bridget Jones.

“There were so many things that were left unresolved at the end of the last film,” said Faye. “I think to have the comfort of seeing a character that you can relate to, because they are real and human and emotionally honest, it’s like having the friend you can be honest with.”

Another fan, Wayne, also explained that he wants to continue seeing the character change and grow long into the future. “Her character keeps evolving. I want to be with Bridget Jones all the way to the nursing home,” said Wayne.

Renée Zellweger and director Michael Morris have been clear that they also have a desire to continue the story. Speaking at a promotional event for “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” the pair acknowledged that the movie was pitched as an ending for the character but also felt there was more to come.

“My understanding was that this was kind of it, but I keep my fingers crossed that she might want to share some more of her own experiences through the world of Bridget,” Zellweger said.

“Me too,” said Morris in response. “And look who we’ve got: Chiwetel Ejiofor in the world now, and we’ve got Leo Woodall in the world now. We’ve got all these fantastic people and Helen’s got her life, her kids are going to college. Let’s hope for more chapters.”
