Britain’s Got Talent winner Sydnie Christmas has opened up her rollercoaster summer.

The 29-year-old singer was crowned this year’s champion on the ITV show, but she says she was fired from her job at the gym after her career took off since her big win in June.

Early in the summer, Sydnie claimed the £250,000 prize and a chance to sing at the Royal Variety Performance this year.

‘I’m not working at the gym anymore and I actually stayed on the rota because I didn’t know how life was going to kick off,’ she explained to The Sun.

‘And then I said “let me stay on the front in case I can help anyone,” but then suddenly there was no time.

‘And then they said to me “Sydnie, I’m going to have to fire you but we’re very happy to do it.” ‘

The change, which is definitely a positive move, only happened recently, and in July Sydnie opened up about how she was yet to quit her day job at that point, while preparing for her nationwide tour.

After auditioning for the show, which saw her earn a golden buzzer from Amanda Holden who was moved by her rendition of Tomorrow from musical Annie, Sydnie went straight back to working at the gym.

‘I did my audition and went back to work in the gym,’ she told The Sun at the time. ‘Funnily enough, I am still on the rota. I need to go in for a meeting and say I definitely can’t work now.’

Since winning BGT, she’s released her single Starlight Express and started working on her first album.

Ahead of the final, Sydnie said she was planning on returning to her job no matter the result as she needed the money.

She told The Mirror: ‘I’ve already had two weeks off – and I’m on a zero-hours contract. I have rent to pay!’

However, after winning BGT, some fans said the show had been fixed as Sydnie did already have a career in the industry after previously performing in Grease and Starlight Express.

But speaking to Metro.co.uk, she said the show was her last shot at success.

‘On New Year’s Eve, I had almost thrown in the towel,’ she recalled, adding how she had told her family this was no longer a viable career.

She continued: ‘It just wasn’t sustainable, and I had given it a good go. But then I got onto BGT. It just shows that when you’re at the point of throwing in the towel, it is your time.’
