Jon M. Chu has revealed that he taking ‘into consideration’ various actors when it comes to casting Britney Spears in his upcoming biopic.

A biopic based on the popstar’s 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, is set to be released by Universal Pictures after they snapped up the rights to the New York Times bestseller.

Chu, director of Wicked is taking on the project spoke about the various rumours floating around about who will take on the role of Britney.

Entertainment Tonight asked him at the Golden Globes red carpet about the pressure from fans to cast popular stars such as Espresso singer Sabrina Carpenter

‘In you’re head, do you look for an unknown to play Britney or do look for one of the pop girlies who are out right now, Sydney Sweeney, Sabrina Carpenter, something around those lines?’ the reporter asked.

‘I’ve seen all fan castings, and I always take those into consideration because maybe there’s a good idea out there,’ Chu said as he admitted he’s seen the internet’s backing of these starlets.

‘But we’ll have to see what the approach of the movie is before we know who’s right for it. But I’m open for anything, really.’

There are several names in the mix to play the Hit Me Baby singer, 43, who came to fame in the late 90s when she was a teenager.

Scream Queen’s actress Emma Roberts, 33, told Hoda and Jenna on NBC News that she’d love to play Britney on screen. ‘She’s an icon I love her, I love her book and it would be a dream.’

She then clarified that the rumours of her involvement in the project were false at this stage and joked she is able to sing and dance ‘just like Britney’.

There are also rumours that Ariana Grande could be involved in the project seeing as she was involved in Chu’s latest project, Wicked. Fans are also keen to see Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown in the role – with various fans supporting the star on social media.

Contrastingly, TikTok star and singer Addison Rae previously told iHeart Radio’s The Hit List that she wasn’t interested in the role: ‘I honestly don’t think anyone deserves to play Britney.  She is such an enigma and such an icon. I don’t think it’s right for anyone to compare me to her at all.

‘I think she really really created something that is untouchable and so in her own lane that nobody will be able to replicate what she did for music.’

In the same red carpet interview, Chu also revealed that Britney herself would be included in the production of the film.

‘She’s going to be very involved,’ he revealed.

‘I haven’t really started anything fully yet, but she will be very involved in this. I have ideas and things, of an approach, but it’s very early.’
