Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes might look like NFL royalty now, but their love story started in a much more down-to-earth way. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and his wife revealed that Brittany didn’t see Patrick as boyfriend material at first. In fact, she admitted he was more of a joke crush when they first met in high school.

Brittany Mahomes Says Patrick Was Stuck in the Friend Zone

During a couples quiz for GQ Sports, Brittany was asked who was interested first. Without missing a beat, she replied that Patrick was into her first. “Maybe he was in the friend zone for a very long time,” she joked, while Patrick playfully disagreed.

The pair explained more of their story in ESPN’s 2024 documentary “The Kingdom,” which followed the Chiefs through season 11. Patrick admitted, “It took a long time” to get out of the friend zone with Brittany. The turning point came on Valentine’s Day during high school.

“He did this little, cute thing for Valentine’s Day one day at lunch at high school,” Brittany said. “He brought me a rose and a card.” Patrick gave credit where it was due. “My mom had given me a card to give to somebody, and I was like, I’m gonna give it to Brittany, I’m gonna surprise her at lunch,” he said.

Brittany laughed as she remembered how that small moment changed everything. “I thought it was beyond cute, and we kind of just went from there. And look at us now!”

From High School Sweethearts to a Family of Five

Patrick proposed to Brittany in 2020, just months after winning his first Super Bowl. “You don’t think it’s going to be nerve-wracking, especially when you’ve been with someone for so long, but before you get on one knee, your heart’s racing, I promise you that,” he told a local radio station, via People.

They married in Hawaii in 2022 and now share three children: daughter Sterling Skye, son Patrick “Bronze” Mahomes III, and their youngest, Golden Ray, born in January 2025.

Patrick and Brittany say their competitive natures are part of what keeps their relationship strong. “There’s no better feeling than having someone by your side who is just as competitive as you and supports you in everything you do,” Patrick told People in 2025. Brittany played soccer in high school and even went pro in Iceland for a year, while Patrick focused on football and basketball before the NFL.

Today, they balance family life with business. The couple co-founded and co-own the Kansas City Current, a professional women’s soccer team, proving they’re a team on and off the field.
