Bruce Springsteen’s wife and fellow E Street Band member Patti Scialfa has been diagnosed with blood cancer.

Scialfa, who tied the knot with the Born in the USA hitmaker in 1991, revealed she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2018.

According to the NHS, multiple myeloma is a type of bone marrow cancer that typically affects multiple parts of the body.

She shared her diagnosis in the new documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band during its premiere yesterday night at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Press who attended the premiere reported the musician said in the film her illness made it difficult to perform which led her to take a step back from touring.

‘I’ve been performing with this band for 40 years. With those first performances, it felt so good to be back onstage. Touring has become a challenge for me,’ she said in the film (per People).

‘In 2018, well, Bruce and I were doing a play on Broadway. I was diagnosed with early-stage multiple myeloma.’

She went on to explain how the disease impacts her immune system and means she must be careful where she ‘chooses to go’ and in what she ‘chooses to do.’

‘Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs on stage, and that’s been a treat. That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that,’ Scialfa continued.

The 71-year-old guitarist and singer/songwriter has been a member of the E Street Band since 1984 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame as part of the group in 2014.

Scialfa and Springsteen share three children, Evan, 34, Jessica, 32, and Samuel, 30.
