Candace Cameron Bure Reflects on Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s ‘Full House’ Legacy

Happy 39th Birthday to the Olsen Twins! That’s right, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, America’s original dual-role adorable darlings, are 39 today. Can you believe it? I CAN’T!

It feels like just yesterday they were running around England while filming their “Winning London” movie. Where has the time gone?

In a perfectly timed appearance on the nostalgic podcast “Hey Dude… The ’90s Called!,” their former “Full House” co-star Candace Cameron Bure shared warm reflections on the twins’ early years on set, their current lives, and the quiet bond they still share in 2025.

Joined by hosts Christine Taylor and David Lascher, Bure dished on everything from Uncle Jesse’s enduring charm to the bittersweet tradition that connects her to the famously private Olsen sisters. Spoiler alert: Michelle Tanner may be off living her best life in New York (canonically, at least), but a little sisterhood and the occasional text still linger.

The Olsen Twins: From Babies to Fashion Stars

When asked why “Full House” has remained such a beloved staple decades later, Bure had a ready theory.

“Apart from it being an unconventional family—like, that’s what people related to, having a mom or a dad or grandparents raising them, or aunts or uncles, that felt familiar to a lot of people,” she said.

But the real secret sauce? “We were one of the first [shows] to have a baby that actually stayed a baby and grew up on the show,” Bure added. “Mary-Kate and Ashley were on at 9 months old, and they stayed on the show for eight years, so you literally saw them grow up.”

It’s true, while other sitcoms skipped forward in time, “Full House” let audiences grow up with Michelle in real time. That kind of continuity became part of the show’s enduring charm and was one of the reasons the audience connected so much with it.

And yes, Bure couldn’t resist throwing in one last nod to her on-screen uncle. “And Uncle Jesse never goes out of style. Everyone loves John [Stamos],” she said with a smile.

Are They Still in Touch?

If you’re dreaming of a Tanner family group chat, you may be out of luck. These days, Bure and the Olsen twins don’t talk regularly, but they do share one poignant moment each year.

“We don’t keep in touch often,” Bure said. “But once a year, the anniversary of Bob [Saget]’s death, which sounds so morbid, but it’s beautiful in that we always have a text moment.”

Saget, the beloved patriarch of the “Full House” family, passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 9, 2022, at age 65. Authorities determined he died in his sleep due to a brain bleed caused by blunt head trauma, likely from an accidental fall.

“That’s really the only time we connect now,” Bure added. “Other than that, they’re really private people.”

That privacy also extended to “Fuller House,” the Netflix reboot that aired from 2016 to 2020. The Olsens famously declined to reprise their shared role of Michelle, choosing instead to focus on their luxury fashion empire, The Row, which they founded in 2006. In a fitting twist, the show wrote Michelle off as living in New York, just like her real-life counterparts.

Where Are They Now?

Bure, now 49, remains a fixture in family-friendly entertainment. From best-selling books to holiday movie marathons for Hallmark, the actress built a second act as a multi-platform personality with a loyal fan base.

The Olsen twins, meanwhile, continue to thrive in the fashion world while staying largely out of the spotlight. Their high-end labels, including The Row and Elizabeth and James, remain staples on red carpets and in Vogue editorials. Though they rarely make public appearances, the twins still ooze attention with every move they make.

As for the rest of the “Full House” crew? Stamos is still as beloved as ever. Sweetin, Andrea Barber, and Dave Coulier continue to work in television and often share throwbacks and tributes to Saget on social media. While the cast may be scattered, their love for each other and their fans hasn’t gone anywhere.

And while Michelle likely won’t be making a screen comeback, Bure’s recent reflections are a sweet reminder that even once-a-year connections can hold meaning.

Here’s to the Olsen twins, forever our favorite sitcom babies, even at 39. Wherever they are celebrating today, we’re raising a glass of orange juice in their honor.
