‘CBS Evening News’ Reveals Its New Permanent Anchor

Tony Dokoupil CBS News Anchor 2025

Tony Dokoupil will take over as the permanent anchor of “CBS Evening News” in January, the network announced Wednesday, marking a significant leadership shift for one of the country’s most established nightly news broadcasts.

The appointment comes after the departures of former co-anchors John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois. Dokoupil, a longtime CBS News journalist and co-host of “CBS Mornings,” will become the primary face delivering the network’s national news report each night.

Tony Dokoupil Named New Anchor of ‘CBS Evening News’

CBS leadership framed the move as a return to traditional journalism values. The network said Dokoupil will begin his new role by traveling across the United States to speak directly with viewers, an effort aimed at reestablishing confidence between audiences and newsrooms.

CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss said the network believes Dokoupil represents the type of reporting Americans are looking for in a polarized media environment.

“We live in a time in which many people have lost trust in the media. Tony Dokoupil is the person to win it back,” Weiss said in a statement. “That’s because he believes in old-school journalistic values: asking the hard questions, following the facts wherever they lead and holding power to account.

CBS News president Tom Cibrowski described Dokoupil as “authentic, compassionate [and] unafraid,” adding that his ability to connect with both global leaders and local communities made him the ideal choice for the role.

“He connects instantly, whether he’s talking with world leaders or with families navigating difficult news in their own backyards,” Cibrowski said.

Dokoupil is set to make his on-air debut as anchor on January 5.

Inside Tony Dokoupil’s Career Before ‘CBS Evening News’

Before being named anchor of “CBS Evening News,” Dokoupil spent several years reporting and co-hosting “CBS Mornings.” His coverage during that time included reporting from Capitol Hill after the Jan. 6 insurrection, examining the results of the most recent presidential election and covering natural disasters and terror attacks across the globe.

Reflecting on his new role, Dokoupil said he sees the nightly news broadcast as a vital platform for reaching Americans in every part of the country.

“After 20 years in journalism, traveling through all 50 states and talking with people in hundreds of far-flung American places, I realize why a country this big needs a show this ambitious,” Dokoupil said.

He added that he looks forward to leading a program with such a long-standing place in American journalism.

With Dokoupil stepping into the anchor seat, CBS signals a renewed commitment to rebuilding audience trust and emphasizing traditional reporting values—an effort the network hopes will resonate with viewers nationwide.
