“Monster” star Charlie Hunnam has a well-documented soft spot for felines, and his latest adventure in cat parenthood is melting hearts everywhere. While filming season 3 of Ryan Murphy’s anthology in Momence, Illinois, Hunnam adopted two adorable kittens — Sugar Plum and Gingerbread — from the River Valley Animal Rescue. Here’s how Hunnam’s cat obsession played out on and off set.

Beginning in October 2024, Hunnam was in the small Illinois town to portray the chilling Ed Gein in season 3 of the Netflix hit, “Monster.” The grim reenactments, complete with prop firearms and a heavy police presence, took their toll on the “Sons of Anarchy” alum, as the experience contrasted sharply with his off-screen charm.

To get through the emotionally draining experience, Hunnam found solace at the Oasis, a local no-kill shelter run by River Valley Animal Rescue, because even a tough guy can’t resist a kitten pile-up.

A March 22 Facebook post from the organization gushed, “After weeks of filming in our little town of Momence, Charlie Hunnam took every chance between takes to shower the cats at Oasis with love.”

A Purr-fect Ending To a ‘Monster’ Role

The post included photos of him covered in cats, FaceTiming his longtime partner, Morgana McNelis, to flaunt his favorites. The shelter dubbed him “a great sport” for letting the kitties climb all over him.

“I think I would love to adopt,” he told the Oasis staff.

Playing Ed Gein, the grave-robbing killer who inspired “Psycho,” could have left the 44-year-old Hunnam in a dark headspace. But these kittens offered a fluffy reprieve. River Valley Animal Rescue praised his “genuine affection” for every cat he met.

Charlie Hunnam’s Cat-Saving Credentials Go Way Back

This isn’t Hunnam’s first rodeo as a cat dad. Back in 2017, during a “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” interview with guest host Kristen Bell, he shared a heroic tale of saving a kitten around Valentine’s Day back in 2000.

He recounted a rainy night when he heard a kitten crying on his roof. It was a treacherous leap to reach it, but when he finally did he found the tiny creature stiff with rigor mortis and drowned.

“I picked him up, and my heart broke. I literally just started crying,” he told Bell, before sprinting two-and-a-half miles to a vet who initially gave the kitten no chance.

“They said he’s 100 percent not gonna make it. And I said, ‘That is an incorrect analysis, my friend. You are gonna give him a shot, and put him in an incubator, and do anything you can do. You’re saving this cat’s life.’ And they said, alright crazy, we’ll do what we can. Four hours later they said he made a complete recovery — come pick him up.”

Hunnam’s insistence paid off, and that cat became his “homie” for 17+ years. Fast forward to 2025, and his shelter visits sparked instant affection for Sugar Plum and Gingerbread.

“Monster” season 3 is expected to premiere on Netflix later this year.
