On June 9 Cher took to social media to pay tribute to her mom on her 99th birthday. Cherâs mother, Georgia Holt, passed away in 2022 at the age of 96 due to complications from pneumonia.
The singer posted on X with her signature emoji-laden style, penning a sweet message to her late mom. âSometimes I Talk 2 U,Need 2 Ask U a Question,Or I FORGET,& THINK,OH..GOTTA CALL MOM. We Both Know U Could Be a Little Off The Wall Sometimes, BUT MOM,I AM WHO I AM ⦠BECAUSE OF U,â the post read in part.Â
Cherâs message was especially poignant given that sheâd always kept fans in the know about her motherâs health via social media, always referring to her simply as âmom.â When Holt passed away, Cher posted a short but heartbreaking message on X that read, âMom is gone.â
All About Georgia Holt
Georgia Holt was more than just Cherâs mom, she was an entertainer in her own right who appeared in iconic series such as âI Love Lucyâ and âThe Adventures of Ozzie and Harrietâ in the 1950s. Holt was also a singer, and she and Cher performed a song together that was featured in the documentary âDear Mom, Love Cher.âÂ
Holtâs personal life was very colorful as well. She was married and divorced six times, twice to Cherâs father, John Paul Sarkasian. “She married my dad twice, I don’t know why,” Cher revealed during an interview with The Times. “She told me she never loved him that much. She just said he was very convincing… I didn’t meet him until I was 11.”
Holt had two daughters, Cher and Georganne LaPiere, and two grandchildren, Cherâs sons, Chaz Bono and Elijah Blue Allman.Â
Georgia Holtâs Tough Love Advice For Cher
Itâs clear that Cher and her mom were very close, and that Holt was supportive of Cherâs extremely successful career. Early in Cherâs life, Holt gave her a piece of practical advice that the singer took to heart, even though on the surface it might sound a bit harsh.
Cher revealed during an interview on âThe Howard Stern Showâ that her mom told her, â…you know, youâre not the prettiest, youâre not the smartest, youâre not the most talented, but youâre special. And when you grow up, you will be special.âÂ
Cher explained that she perceived her motherâs words as practical, and emphasized that Holt truly saw her potential. âMy mom was, before Sonny [Bono], the only person that believed I would be something,â she said.
