Cher Pays Tribute to Her Late Mother Georgia Holt on Her 99th Birthday

Cher and Georgia Holt

On June 9 Cher took to social media to pay tribute to her mom on her 99th birthday. Cher’s mother, Georgia Holt, passed away in 2022 at the age of 96 due to complications from pneumonia.

The singer posted on X with her signature emoji-laden style, penning a sweet message to her late mom. “Sometimes I Talk 2 U,Need 2 Ask U a Question,Or I FORGET,& THINK,OH..GOTTA CALL MOM. We Both Know U Could Be a Little Off The Wall Sometimes, BUT MOM,I AM WHO I AM … BECAUSE OF U,” the post read in part.

Cher’s message was especially poignant given that she’d always kept fans in the know about her mother’s health via social media, always referring to her simply as “mom.” When Holt passed away, Cher posted a short but heartbreaking message on X that read, “Mom is gone.”

All About Georgia Holt

Georgia Holt was more than just Cher’s mom, she was an entertainer in her own right who appeared in iconic series such as “I Love Lucy” and “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” in the 1950s. Holt was also a singer, and she and Cher performed a song together that was featured in the documentary “Dear Mom, Love Cher.”

Holt’s personal life was very colorful as well. She was married and divorced six times, twice to Cher’s father, John Paul Sarkasian. “She married my dad twice, I don’t know why,” Cher revealed during an interview with The Times. “She told me she never loved him that much. She just said he was very convincing… I didn’t meet him until I was 11.”

Holt had two daughters, Cher and Georganne LaPiere, and two grandchildren, Cher’s sons, Chaz Bono and Elijah Blue Allman.

Georgia Holt’s Tough Love Advice For Cher

It’s clear that Cher and her mom were very close, and that Holt was supportive of Cher’s extremely successful career. Early in Cher’s life, Holt gave her a piece of practical advice that the singer took to heart, even though on the surface it might sound a bit harsh.

Cher revealed during an interview on “The Howard Stern Show” that her mom told her, “…you know, you’re not the prettiest, you’re not the smartest, you’re not the most talented, but you’re special. And when you grow up, you will be special.”

Cher explained that she perceived her mother’s words as practical, and emphasized that Holt truly saw her potential. “My mom was, before Sonny [Bono], the only person that believed I would be something,” she said.
