Viewers expressed concern after Clive Myrie hosted tonight’s BBC News at Six while sporting a drooping left eye.

The broadcaster, 60, is one of the BBC’s chief news correspondents and was appointed a presenter for the news channel in 2009.

Myrie, who also hosts Mastermind, has been at the helm of weekday bulletins on BBC One since June 2014.

However, as he appeared on screens this evening, audiences at home noticed something different about his appearance.

The journalist looked his typical smart self, wearing a black suit, white shirt, and navy blue tie.

But while his right eye was fully open, the left appeared half closed, prompting viewers to question what had happened.

Taking to X, ValWipTweets tagged @BBCNews, writing: ‘I hope Clive Myrie’s OK. A lot of us are noticing his droopy eye.’

‘What’s wrong with Clive Myrie’s eye tonight?’, asked notyourorder.

philiplickley wrote: ‘Is Clive Myrie okay? His left eye looks inflamed.’

Also heading straight to the official BBC account, KirstyMcCann asked: ‘can you confirm Clive Myrie is OK?’

Speculation continued as viewers pondered what the cause could be, as United_Ste suggested a possible stye, which is a small, painful lump on the eyelid.

Others expressed hope that Myrie is ‘OK’, as user Auchepis noted that a droopy eyelid can be indicative of ‘stress or trauma’.

Following tonight’s broadcast, Myrie took to his own X account to address the worry in a jokey manner.

‘Happy N.Year everyone and thank you all for your concern over my left eye,’ he began.

‘It’s nothing serious, just an infection. I did think about wearing an eye patch, but the boss said no! A bit like Long John Silver. He wasn’t having any of it! Cheers.’

When contacted for comment, the BBC also assured Metro that Myrie is ‘fine’.

Myrie recently made headlines after failing to declare outside earnings, as the newsreader did not declare £145,000 from corporate events over the last year; it was reported in October.

Myrie, who recently published a memoir and also has a travel series, reportedly failed to include 11 engagements in his list to the corporation.

This came after BBC director-general Tim Davie requested on-screen talent declare external earnings and publish declarations every three months in an attempt for more transparency.

Myrie later apologised and said he would not be taking part in any more paid external events for ‘the foreseeable future’.

He wrote on X: ‘An apology – I’ve had several administrative issues, and I didn’t fill out the correct paperwork for some of my external public events, so they haven’t been published until now.

‘I’ve told the BBC I won’t be taking part in any more paid external events in the foreseeable future, beyond a handful of pre-existing commitments, so that this doesn’t happen again.’

Myrie began his career with the BBC in 1987 as a trainee local radio reporter.

He worked his way up to become one of the broadcaster’s most known and respected figures.

Last year, he was part of the BBC’s election night coverage for the UK General Election, alongside Laura Kuenssberg. He also covered the US presidential election.
