On the podcast, Feldman indicated that Depp was the person who got him off the film. “Johnny Depp … was cast after I was and apparently whispered into the producers’ ear that he wasn’t fond of me,” he said.

He said that “honesty” was “ballsy and risky, but I have no choice.”

Feldman said he was sober but that Depp believed he was still using drugs. He also said on the podcast that he never ended up seeing the movie.

“Had I not been pushed out and done that role, who knows what would have happened from that point forward. That gave Leonardo his first nomination,” Feldman said. “There was a bitter tea there, but you don’t hang on those, you get past them.”

He said he was also up for “Titanic” a couple years later, but he said he wasn’t “that close.” He said he was also up for a role in “The Lord of the Rings.”

Feldman said when he decided to get sober in 1989 and 1990, he made a “solemn oath” to himself to “literally create a constitution which is that I am going to be continually honest in all of my dealings. I have to be.”
