From unforgettable breakups to hilarious girlsâ nights, “Sex and the City” has delivered some of TVâs most iconic moments. According to Cynthia Nixon, who plays iconic character Miranda Hobbes, many of those unforgettable moments were pulled straight from real-life experiences.
In a new interview with ELLE UK, the actress, who stars as Miranda Hobbes, shared that the showâs storylines have always been rooted in actual events. She reveals that this is one of the reasons fans still connect with it, 27 years later.
Cynthia Nixon Says Every Storyline Was Rooted in Real Life
When it came to crafting “Sex and the City” iconic storylines, the writers didnât need to look far for inspiration.
âOur writers have always based our plot lines on things that have actually happened to them or happened to someone that they directly know, so they can quiz them about it,â Nixon shared.
That personal connection, Nixon says, is part of why the show resonated so deeply with audiences.
âSo these crazy, outrageous things, particularly back in the day [during Sex and the City], that happened to these characters were always rooted in truth, and an audience can smell that a mile away,â she added.

“And Just Like That…” has sparked plenty of debate, especially around Mirandaâs new direction. Nixon says she doesnât read the reviews. For her, the focus is on continuing Mirandaâs story.

âIâd love a season 4 and Iâd love a season 5,â Nixon said. âI love this world and itâs so lovely to be a part of it. I mean, who gets to do this? To play a character for 30 years? Itâs really, really special.â
Based on Candace Bushnellâs New York Observer column, “Sex and the City” premiered in 1998 and went on to deliver six seasons, two feature films, and the current sequel series, “And Just Like That,” now airing on Max.
