Dakota Johnson is sharing rare details on the unexpected but deeply special friendship she shares with Madonna. The 35-year-old actress recently opened up during a chat with E! News alongside her “Splitsville” co-star Adria Arjona, recalling how her bond with the pop legend has grown over the years.
Their closeness was on full display in July, when Madonna, 67, shared Instagram photos from a birthday celebration that showed Johnson resting her head on the singerâs shoulder in a tender moment.

âI really love her. Weâve been like weird friends for a while,â Johnson said. âI met her when I was really young because she did a movie with my stepfather, and then I got to know her later because we were going to work together on something.â
How Johnson First Met Madonna

Johnsonâs connection to Madonna traces back to her stepfather, Antonio Banderas. The pop superstar starred opposite Banderas in the 1996 film adaptation of “Evita”.

The movie was released months after his marriage to Melanie Griffith, Johnson’s mother.
Johnson explained that while she first crossed paths with Madonna as a teenager, they grew closer as adults through shared projects and mutual circles. âWeâve always kind of circled each other, but she is an energy to be near that is so beautiful and so wild,â she shared. âItâs just cool that she even wants to talk to me.â
Madonnaâs Career & Johnsonâs Latest Work
While Johnson didnât reveal what project she and Madonna once discussed collaborating on, fans recently heard Madonnaâs 1984 hit âMaterial Girlâ featured in the trailer for Johnsonâs upcoming romantic drama Materialists.
Madonna, whose career spans decades of chart-topping hits and films such as A League of Their Own, last acted in Arthur and the Invisibles in 2006 before directing W.E. in 2011. She has been developing a biopic about her life, with Julia Garner attached to play her.
Johnson Balances Acting & Directing
Beyond her friendship with Madonna, Johnson is keeping busy with multiple projects. She stars in “Splitsville”, opening in limited theaters August 22 before expanding nationwide September 5. She will also appear in the 2026 film adaptation of Colleen Hooverâs bestselling novel Verity.
At the Cannes Film Festival in May, Johnson revealed she is preparing to make her directorial debut with a script by Vanessa Burghardt, her former “Cha Cha Real Smooth” co-star.
