Georgia Tennant went straight for the jugular with her dig at Rishi Sunak following the Conservative Party’s General Election defeat.

Labour won a landslide election victory last night, meaning Sir Keir Starmer is now the Prime Minister after several high-profile Tories, including former PM Liz Truss, were defeated on a spectacular scale at the polls.

Several celebrities and public figures have spoken out in celebration of the Conservative loss, such as Carol Vorderman, Nigella Lawson, and Russell T Davies.

Joining them was Georgia and Doctor Who icon David, 53, who made a sly reference to the hit sci-fi programme on Friday morning.

Taking to Instagram, actress Georgia, 39, who married David in 2011, shared a selfie of the couple with the Palace of Westminster in the background.

Pointing to the Houses of Parliament, Georgia wore a smiley expression, while a beaming David snapped the pic.

She added the hashtag: ‘#turnsouthedidlooktired’.

Taking to socials, fans quickly picked up on what she was putting down.

‘Turns out he did look tired’ is, in fact, a quote from Doctor Who, with fabledfool explaining on X: ‘It’s a reference from Doctor Who, Ten started the downfall of one of the Prime Ministers by whispering in one of her employee’s ear “don’t you think she looks tired”. It’s so funny and amazing that Georgia quoted it.’

David’s Doctor made the remark back in 2005, then proceeded to play the Time Lord across four years and 47 episodes, briefly returning for a surprise cameo ahead of Ncuti Gatwa’s debut.

The original quote featured in the episode titled The Christmas Invasion, in which David’s incarnation sparked the downfall of Prime Minister Harriet Jones (played by Penelope Wilton).

Bringing her career crumbling down, the Doctor whispers in the ear of her aide Alex (Adam Garcia): ‘Don’t you think she looks tired?’

Heaping praise on the celebrity spouses for their political gag and throwback reference, fans hailed Georgia and David as ‘icons’.

‘This might be my favorite post ever omg’, wrote drfangirlphd.

‘Georgia and David Tennant should be considered national treasures in the UK for their consistent opposition to governmental greed and bigotry – never mind the acting!’, wrote DeclanMMills.

User short_pants praised: ‘Georgia Tennant is a real gem, as is her husband.’

Others described it as ‘the sickest of burns’ and declared them ‘the people’s champions’.

Georgia and David have long been outspoken when it comes to politics and social issues.

Recently, now-ex-Prime Minister Sunak commented that David was ‘the problem’ when he hit out at politician Kemi Badenoch over LGBTQ+ rights, having made no secret of his own allyship.

Attending the LGBT Awards, David was given the accolade for celebrity ally for his commitment to supporting the trans community.

‘I am honoured to receive this, I’m thrilled to be here and to be a part of this night,’ he began in his acceptance speech.

While standing on stage, he praised his wife as he said: ‘With a slogan I attract the ire of the occasional online idiot, but I don’t have social media, so even I have to be told about that from my brilliant wife, Georgia, who is the real engine behind anything we do. She educated me about empathy and understanding and she has been a huge educator for me.

‘But I think I suppose if I’m honest I’m a little depressed by the fact that acknowledging that everyone has the right to be who they want to be and live their life how they want to live it, as long as they’re not hurting anyone else, should merit any kind of special award or special mention, because it’s common sense, isn’t it? It is human decency. We shouldn’t live in a world where that is worth remarking on.’

He then referenced Badenoch, who has served as the Minister for Women and Equalities since 2022.

It came after the politician pledged to change the 2010 Equality Act in a move that would have denied trans women access to ‘women-only’ spaces, despite its potential to put them at harm’s risk.

‘However, until we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn’t exist anymore… I don’t wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up,’ David quipped. ‘Whilst we do live in this world, I am honoured to receive this. I’m thrilled to be here and to be a part of this night. Pride is very important in our house. It’s a family affair. We have skin in the game.

‘So this event tonight thrills me. It gives me hope. It gives me fire, it gives me energy and deep joy. And even if I feel I don’t really deserve this, I’m very pleased and very proud to be receiving it. Thank you all so much.’

Wishing for Badenoch to ‘shut up’ caused Sunak to tweet: ‘Freedom of speech is the most powerful feature of our democracy.

‘If you’re calling for women to shut up and wishing they didn’t exist, you are the problem.’

Meanwhile, new leader Sir Keir responded by admitting he ‘wouldn’t have engaged in the way’ David did.

He told press: ‘I think in politics, as in life, it’s really important that we are able to robustly disagree with others.

‘Obviously, that happens a lot in the general election campaign, but we should do it with respect for everybody involved in that robust discussion.’
