Demi Moore is showing support for her ex-husband Bruce Willis during his battle with dementia, and even more so, she is defending his wife Emma Heming Willis for how she’s handled this devastating situation.
Emma has recently faced some criticism after revealing that Bruce lives separately from her and their two daughters, Mabel (13) and Evelyn (11). But Moore is making it known that Emma has done an incredible job as Bruce’s caretaker.
âBeing the ex-wife, even though our family is very connected, is an interesting position,â Moore said during the Sept. 2 episode of Oprah Winfreyâs podcast. “So much fell on Emma to really figure this whole thing out, and the most beautiful thing was recognizing the importance for caregivers and that they have to take care of themselves. If they donât put that time into making sure that theyâre okay, then they canât show up for anyone else.â
âI have so much compassion for Emma in this, being a young woman,â she added. âThereâs no way that anybody could have anticipated where this was going to go, and I really think sheâs done a masterful job. She has been so dedicated to forging the right path. Sheâs had equal amounts of fear and strength and courage in navigating this.â
Moore and Bruce were married from 1987 to 2000. He and Emma got married on March 21, 2009, in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Demi Moore Opens Up About Watching Bruce Willis Decline
During the podcast, Winfrey asked Moore some very tough questions.
“How has it been for you personally to watch this moment, someone you have shared much of your life with and children with suffer from this disease?” Winfrey asked.
âItâs difficult,” Moore explained. “Itâs hard to see somebody who was so vibrant and strong and so directed shift into this other parts of themself.â
“But my particular perspective is, one, I really always say it’s so important just to meet them where they’re at,” she continued. “Don’t have an expectation of them needing to be who they were or who you want them to be. And when you do that I find that there is an incredible sweetness and something that’s soft and tender and loving. Perhaps it is more playful and childlike in certain sense because of how much more caretaking they need.
Emma Heming Willis Has a Book Coming Out Soon
The actor’s wife is releasing a book that will dive into the couple’s journey through Bruce’s dementia battle. “The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path” will be released on Sept. 9.
“With The Unexpected Journey, Emma has written the book she wishes sheâd been handed on the day of Bruceâs diagnosis: a supportive guide to navigating the complicated, heartbreaking, and transformative experience that is caregiving for your loved one,” the book’s description states (via Amazon). “Weaving her personal journey as a care partner with the latest research and insights from the worldâs top dementia, caregiving, and integrative experts she offers the guidance and wisdom caregivers everywhere so desperately need to hear.”
